The Oscars stage transformed into a juke joint Sunday, blending music of the past and the present during the 98th Academy Awards. <\/p>\n
Miles Caton<\/a> and Raphael Saadiq<\/a> performed \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d<\/a> a musical centerpiece of \u201cSinners.\u201d<\/a> Caton plays a preacher\u2019s teenage son in the movie who risks his soul to sing blues music. <\/p>\n The duo was accompanied on stage by various artists \u201cin an homage to the film\u2019s singular visual style,\u201d the academy said in a statement earlier this week. Buddy Guy<\/a>, a blues guitarist who played an older version of Caton\u2019s character, took the stage alongside \u201cSinners\u201d actors Jayme Lawson and Li Jun Li. <\/p>\n Sammie, an emerging blues singer, penned the piece as a confession to his pastor father and his performance was powerful enough to send the roof a juke joint on fire.<\/p>\n A group of break dancers waltzed through the stage as rapper Shaboozey joined Caton in the vocals, who used a guitar similar of the one his character used in the movie. <\/p>\n Jack O\u2019Connell, Lola Kirke and Peter Dreimanis \u2014 the actors who terrorized the juke joint as blood thirsty vampires in the movie \u2014 also snaked their way onto the stage. <\/p>\n Also on stage were ballet dancer Misty Copeland and guitarists Eric Gales and Christone Ingram. Musicians Brittany Howard, Bobby Rush and Alice Smith were part of the performance as well. <\/p>\n The song is only one of two from this year\u2019s nominated original songs<\/a> that was performed live. The singing trio Huntr\/x from Netflix\u2019s \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d will also perform the breakout hit \u201cGolden.\u201d The movie took home an Oscar for animated feature earlier in the night.<\/p>\n During the performance, similar to the famous scene in the movie, Black music artists across eras appear all around Sammie, which composer Ludwig G\u00f6ransson said is a moment<\/a> when \u201ctime and space disappears.\u201d <\/p>\n
