Amy Madigan won the Academy Award<\/a> for best supporting actress Sunday for her role in the supernatural thriller \u201cWeapons,\u201d<\/a> 40 years after her last nomination.<\/p>\n

Madigan embodied the role of Gladys, giving a phenomenally creepy portrayal of the great-aunt of a young boy whose classmates go missing overnight. She won the Critics\u2019 Choice Award and Actor Award in the same category.<\/p>\n

The 75-year-old let out a deep cackle as she went on stage to accept the award.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re kind of advised, \u2019Don\u2019t say all these names, as nobody knows who the hell these people are,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut you\u2019re not rattling them off. They mean something to you; that you couldn\u2019t be here without them.”<\/p>\n

The last time she was nominated for an Oscar<\/a> was for her role in 1985 family drama \u201cTwice in a Lifetime,\u201d setting a record for the longest gap between nominations for an actress.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s asking me \u2026 \u2018Well it\u2019s been 40 years, what\u2019s different about this time?\u2019\u201d Madigan said. \u201cWhat\u2019s different is this little gold guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her character is so integral to one of the movie\u2019s biggest twists that she was kept out of the press tour and early marketing for the film so as to not give away any spoilers.<\/p>\n

\u201cGladys has surprised me, she\u2019s getting a lot of love back,\u201d Madigan said in her acceptance speech at the Annual Actor Awards. \u201cI didn\u2019t know y\u2019all wanted to hang out with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her character is \u201ckind of inspiring in a strange way,\u201d despite being the movie’s villain, she said after her Oscar win.<\/p>\n

If given the opportunity, she would love to reprise the role in an Aunt Gladys prequel, she said.<\/p>\n

Some of Madigan\u2019s most notable roles in her long career were in \u201cField of Dreams\u201d and \u201cUncle Buck\u201d in 1989. She has also acted in Broadway and off-Broadway productions.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpportunities (as an older actress) are less and you just hope that something finds you so you can find it,\u201d she said in an interview with The New York Times. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t take it for granted, because you can go up and then you can go all the way down, as we know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madigan thanked director and writer Zach Cregger for writing a \u201cdream part\u201d for her. While horror movies have traditionally been snubbed for awards, being treated like the \u201clittle kids table at Thanksgiving,\u201d Madigan said she was heartened by the recognition for genre films like \u201cWeapons\u201d and \u201cSinners\u201d this year.<\/p>\n

She also gave a shoutout to the other nominees Teyana Taylor in \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Wunmi Mosaku in \u201cSinners,\u201d and Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d The category did not have a clear favorite ahead of this year\u2019s ceremony, with a crowded field of nominees splitting the biggest awards of the season.<\/p>\n
