Barbra Streisand had the Dolby Theatre in tears when she performed a tribute to Robert Redford during the Oscars on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail and won the Academy Award for best director. And I miss him now more than ever,\u201d Streisand said. <\/p>\n
Streisand sang \u201cThe Way We Were,\u201d the title track to the 1973 film she starred in with Redford. The romantic drama, directed by Sydney Pollack, is considered one of film\u2019s greatest love stories. <\/p>\n
Written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch, \u201cThe Way We Were\u201d won the Oscar for original song. Streisand also performed the song to honor Hamlisch at the 2013 Oscars.<\/p>\n
Streisand highlighted Redford\u2019s \u201cbackbone, on and off the screen,\u201d speaking about his efforts to support the free press, protect the environment and encourage new voices through his Sundance Institute based in Utah. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was thoughtful and bold,\u201d Stresiand said. <\/p>\n
When Redford died<\/a> in September at 89, Streisand shared on Instagram<\/a> that he was \u201cone of a kind\u201d and that she was \u201cso grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them! Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie,\u201d Streisand said. \u201cBob was charismatic, intelligent, intense, always interesting \u2014 and one of the finest actors ever.\u201d<\/p>\n In Streisand\u2019s 2023 memoir, \u201cMy Name Is Barbra,\u201d she wrote that \u201cLike the greatest movie stars, Bob understands the power of restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBob and I were genuinely curious about each other, and I believe that\u2019s what comes across on the screen,\u201d Streisand wrote in the book, \u201cHe and I had a real rapport and the audience could sense it.\u201d<\/p>\n After \u201cThe Way We Were,\u201d Redford went on to win an Academy Award in 1981 for his directorial debut, \u201cOrdinary People.\u201d<\/a> He was nominated for three other Oscars and received an honorary Oscar in 2002, which Streisand presented to him. When introducing Redford, she credited him with giving her \u201cone of the most exciting and memorable experiences\u201d of her career. <\/p>\n \u201cAs an artist, I just can\u2019t think of a better life than the one that I\u2019ve been blessed with,\u201d Redford said in his acceptance speech. \u201cIt\u2019s just a great ride, with many wonderful relationships and experiences along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
