Sean Penn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor but he wasn’t in attendance at Sunday’s ceremony, reportedly due<\/a> to European travel plans as he looked to visit Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Penn, who won the Oscar for his role as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in “One Battle After Another,” has been a fierce advocate for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people following Russia’s invasion of the country in 2022.<\/p>\n

The actor met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shortly thereafter and gave him his first statuette from his Oscar-winning performance in “Mystic River,” The Hollywood Reporter recently found<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the time, Penn said that he hoped Zelenskyy, in holding onto the statuette, would be able to “bring it back to Malibu<\/a>” when he defeated Russia.<\/p>\n

After Penn was a no-show Sunday and presenter Kieran Culkin accepted his most-recent statuette in his absence, The New York Times reported that the actor wasn’t on hand as he planned to visit Ukraine as of late last week.<\/p>\n

It’s unclear the reason for Penn’s visit, although his absence at Sunday’s ceremony arrives after he skipped the BAFTAs and Actor Awards, the Times noted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
