\n Hollywood\u2019s biggest stars gathered in Los Angeles on Sunday to honor some incredible movies and celebrate the power of film, while giving in to the fact that putting the world\u2019s troubles aside, even for a night, is impossible.\n <\/p>\n

\n There were indeed some happy moments, including history-making wins and uplifting musical performances. But there was also an element of sadness \u2014 much time was devoted to honoring those legends we lost this year, and even host Conan O\u2019Brien took time to acknowledge that we live in \u201cvery chaotic, frightening times.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n How will this year\u2019s Oscars stand the test of time? Coming amid turmoil both at home and abroad, maybe its lesson is that difficult moments can lead to incredible art, and that celebrating together is all the more important.\n <\/p>\n

\n On with the show!\n <\/p>\n

\n <\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n Raise your hand if you thought this time would be different and that the buzz for \u201cSinners\u201d \u2014 a creative and cultural achievement in the horror genre and at large \u2014 would lead it to unmitigated glory. Womp.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the end, \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d another deserving film in so many ways, came out on top. But: \u201cSinners\u201d is in no way a loser here.\n <\/p>\n

\n With 16 total nods, the movie entered Oscar night making history, as the most-nominated movie ever in 98 years of the Academy Awards. To have a project that is not only critically acclaimed and culturally significant, but also a powerhouse at the box office, is rare. To have that film be a horror film, written and directed by a Black man and featuring a mostly Black cast, felt like a whole other level.\n <\/p>\n

\n While trophies are nice, the movie did it right in the ways that matter most. That feels like the biggest win of all.\n <\/p>\n

\n \"In<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n Going back to those \u201cSinners\u201d triumphs\u2026\n <\/p>\n

\n With no clear frontrunner, all eyes were on the best actor race this year and the top award went to Michael B. Jordan for his performance playing twins Smoke and Stack in the film.\n <\/p>\n

\n The actor appeared stunned when his name was read and the theater erupted in thunderous applause as the former child actor accepted his first-ever Oscar.\n <\/p>\n

\n After thanking his family, who were all in the audience, Jordan thanked the film\u2019s director, Oscar-winner Ryan Coogler, who has cast Jordan in every film he\u2019s made.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cYou gave me the opportunity and the space to be seen,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Jordan called out Black Oscar-winning actors who came before him, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx and Halle Berry, among others, saying how proud he was to stand \u201camongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \"Anna<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n Note to future Oscars bookers: If you\u2019re going to put what is essentially a commercial in the middle of the ceremony, it better be this good.\n <\/p>\n

\n Anna Wintour made a surprise appearance on the Oscars stage \u2014 even dropping her signature sunglasses, at least for a while, for the occasion.\n <\/p>\n

\n The legendary Vogue editor appeared alongside Anne Hathaway to present two awards \u2014 for costume design and makeup, and for hairstyling, both of which went to \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Wintour and Hathaway walked out to \u201cVogue\u201d by Madonna, a song that famously appears in \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada,\u201d the film in which Hathaway stars alongside Meryl Streep, who plays Miranda Priestly, a character believed to be loosely based on Wintour. A sequel to the beloved 2006 film will be released in theaters on May 1.\n <\/p>\n

\n The duo nodded at the film while presenting, with Wintour jokingly calling Hathaway \u201cEmily\u201d at one point, a reference to the assistant character played by Emily Blunt in the movie.\n <\/p>\n

\n While there were only two musical performances during the telecast, they more than made up for any feeling that it might lack in spectacle.\n <\/p>\n

\n First came a stunning live performance of \u201cI Lied to You\u201d from \u201cSinners\u201d that was led by the film\u2019s breakout star<\/a>, Miles Canton, and songwriter Raphael Saadiq<\/a>. Joining them on stage were ballerina Misty Copeland, blues legend Buddy Guy (who also appears in the film), Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Brittany Howard, Grammy-winner Shaboozey and blues artist Christone \u201cKingfish\u201d Ingram.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d co-written by Saadiq and Coogler\u2019s longtime collaborator Ludwig G\u00f6ransson (who won an Oscar for the original score), is the soundtrack to one of the most transcendent moments in \u201cSinners,\u201d when various performers of Black music through history are represented in a sequence that seamlessly melds past, present and future, a moment that was represented beautifully on the Oscars stage.\n <\/p>\n

\n That track from \u201cSinners\u201d was up for best original song, which ended up going to \u201cGolden\u201d from \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d the other standout performance of the night. The presentation was a celebration of Korean culture that literally shimmered with gold, as dancers spread out over the stage with billowing flags.\n <\/p>\n

\n Singers EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami of HUNTR\/X, who are the singing voices from the hit Netflix film, had the audience in the Dolby Theater on their feet with lights that they waved in time to the tune.\n <\/p>\n

\n \"It's<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n For only the sixth time in Oscars history, one of the categories ended in a tie. The Oscar for best live action short film went to two films: \u201cThe Singers\u201d and \u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n This is the sixth true tie. In the \u201830s, two films \u2014 \u201cDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\u201d and \u201cThe Champ\u201d both won in the best actor category because rules at the time indicated that if two nominees were within three votes of each other, both would receive the award. Today, only an exact match in votes qualifies for a tie.\n <\/p>\n

\n Upon realizing the situation, presenter Kumail Nanjiani urged everyone to stay calm. \u201cIt\u2019s a tie. I\u2019m not joking,\u201d he said, promising that \u201cwe\u2019re going to get through this.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The tie was not completely unanticipated for Alexandre Singh, one of the directors of \u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019re also a little bit Oscar geeks,\u201d Singh said in the press room after the win. \u201cSo, we had actually discussed that this could happen but couldn\u2019t possibly imagine.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Natalie Musteata, Singh\u2019s co-director, said that a Reddit user asked the duo before the awards if they would be happy to share the award and they answered with, \u201cHeck yeah!\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Host Conan O\u2019Brien did a pretty good job of keeping things funny while acknowledging, in his own way, that we live in extremely strange times. His best zingers included a penis joke that made reference to President Donald Trump\u2019s love of sticking his name<\/a> on buildings<\/a> and (\u201cWelcome back, we\u2019re coming to you live from the Has a Small Penis Theatre \u2014 let\u2019s see him put his name in front of that.\u201d) and an Epstein files joke that elicited a chorus of \u201cwhoas\u201d from attendees.\n <\/p>\n

\n But the overt politics largely stopped there, landing the host somewhere in that safe-ish zone between a vintage Jimmy Kimmel (who never shied from excoriating Trump) and Actor Awards host Kristen \u201cWe\u2019re going to keep things fun tonight\u201d Bell.\n <\/p>\n

\n O\u2019Brien seemingly aimed to make sure his comments didn\u2019t overshadow what he saw as the mission \u2014 to acknowledge but not dwell on the fact that \u201cthese are very chaotic, frightening times.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s at moments like these that I believe that the Oscars are particularly resonant,\u201d O\u2019Brien said at one point. \u201cWe pay tribute tonight not just to film, but to the ideals of global artistry, collaboration, patience, resilience, and that rarest of qualities today: optimism.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Among the presenters and winners, there were other statements that touched on current events, one of the most memorable being when Javier Bardem took the stage with his own pointed message: \u201cNo to war and free Palestine.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Academy went all out to honor the many Hollywood legends who died since the last ceremony.\n <\/p>\n

\n Billy Crystal honored his friends and collaborators Rob and Michelle Reiner, an emotional tribute that culminated in his being joined on stage by several actors who starred in some of the late director\u2019s films, including Cary Elwes, Carol Kane and Fred Savage from \u201cThe Princess Bride,\u201d Kathy Bates from \u201cMisery,\u201d and Christopher Guest and Michael McKean from \u201cThis is Spinal Tap.\u201d Jerry O\u2019Connell and Wil Wheaton from \u201cStand by Me\u201d also took the stage, among others.\n <\/p>\n

\n Rachel McAdams paid homage to the great Diane Keaton, with whom she starred in the 2005 holiday classic \u201cThe Family Stone,\u201d<\/a> calling her \u201cluminous on screen and indelible in life.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Moments later, Barbra Streisand took the stage to honor her friend Robert Redford, whom she starred alongside in the 1973 Oscar-winning romance \u201cThe Way We Were.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Streisand described Redford as an \u201cintellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail\u201d before gracing the audience with a verse of the titular song.\n <\/p>\n

\n A big moment came when Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who worked on \u201cSinners,\u201d took the award for best cinematography \u2014 becoming the first woman and person of color to take home the Oscar in that category.\n <\/p>\n

\n Accepting the award, she asked all the women in the room to stand. \u201cBecause I feel like I don\u2019t get here without you guys,\u201d she said to a roar of long applause. \u201cI really, really, truly mean that.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Another history-making moment came when \u201cGolden\u201d from \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d became the first K-Pop tune to win the award for best original song.\n <\/p>\n

\n The song has dominated awards season \u2014 and streaming. \u201cGrowing up, you know, people made fun of me for liking K-Pop but now everyone is singing our song, and all the Korean lyrics,\u201d EJAE,<\/a> one of the singers and songwriters on \u201cGolden,\u201d said in an emotional acceptance speech. \u201cI\u2019m so proud.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The reign of Timoth\u00e9e \u201cTimmy\u201d Chalamet in the cultural conversation is over\u2026at least for now. \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d walked away with zero awards, despite nominations for best picture, best actor and best director for Josh Safdie, among others. Did balletgate<\/a> do Timmy in? Unlikely. But at this point, the more interesting question is what he does next.\n <\/p>\n

\n There were other snubs. \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d the celebrated Brazilian film starring Wagner Moura, who was up for best actor, walked away with nothing, as did \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d by Iranian director Jafar Panahi.\n <\/p>\n

\n Meanwhile, eight-time nominee \u201cHamnet\u201d walked away with a single win, with odds-favorite Jessie Buckley fulfilling her destiny in the best actress category.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
