Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s recent controversial remarks about ballet and opera became a talking point at the 2026 Oscars.<\/p>\n
During Sunday night\u2019s ceremony, a couple of people made playful digs at Chalamet\u2019s comments after the actor previously said \u201cno one cares about this anymore\u201d while discussing the art forms.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n O\u2019Brien then addressed the actor, saying, \u201cThey\u2019re just mad you left out jazz.\u201d The camera cut to Chalamet and his date, girlfriend Kylie Jenner, who both laughed.<\/p>\n The discourse over his comments<\/a> began after clips resurfaced from Chalamet\u2019s live conversation with Matthew McConaughey during a Variety and celebrity.land town hall last month. During the discussion, Chalamet was asked whether audiences still have an interest in slower-paced movies.<\/p>\n In his response, Chalamet said he wouldn\u2019t want to be involved in an art form that \u201cno one cares about,\u201d mentioning ballet and opera as examples.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t want to be working in ballet or opera where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,\u2019\u201d he said with a laugh. \u201cAll respect to the ballet and opera people out there \u2026 I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I\u2019m taking shots for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n His comments sparked an outpouring of reactions from celebrities, as well as opera legend Andrea Bocelli<\/a> and former American Ballet Theatre dancer Misty Copeland<\/a>, who joined the Sinners crew at Sunday night\u2019s ceremony for a performance of \u201cI Lied to You.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n At the 2026 Oscars, Chalamet is nominated for best actor for Marty Supreme<\/span>, directed by Josh Safdie. The nomination marked his third, following Call Me by Your Name in 2018 and A Complete Unknown in 2025. With the nomination, Chalamet became the youngest male actor to earn three acting nods since Marlon Brando in 1954.<\/p>\n Released by A24, Marty Supreme stars Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a ping-pong hustler trying to make it out of Manhattan\u2019s Lower East Side, where the film was shot<\/a>. The cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A\u2019zion, Kevin O\u2019Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Emory Cohen and Sandra Bernhard.
