Billy Crystal<\/a> remembered his best friend, Rob Reiner<\/a>, in an extended and emotional in memoriam at the Oscars<\/a> on Sunday, and legend Barbra Streisand<\/a> honoured her friend and co-star Robert Redford<\/a> by singing a snippet from their film The Way We Were. <\/p>\n

Canadian actor Rachel McAdams<\/a> paid tribute to \u201cfellow Canadian\u201d Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/a> and her The Family Stone co-star Diane Keaton<\/a> in a heartfelt speech.<\/p>\n

Although the Oscars<\/a> selectively expanded certain in memoriam segments for this year\u2019s ceremony, they still didn\u2019t manage to accommodate everyone the entertainment industry lost between last year\u2019s ceremony and this year\u2019s broadcast.<\/p>\n

The in memoriam segment, honouring notable figures from the film industry who have died over the last year \u2014 held at every Academy Awards ceremony \u2014 did not include James Van Der Beek<\/a>, Malcolm-Jamal Warner<\/a>, Robert Carradine,<\/a> George Wendt<\/a>, Richard Chamberlain<\/a>, Eric Dane<\/a> and Brigitte Bardot<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n

Dawson\u2019s Creek and Varsity Blues star Van Der Beek died on Feb. 11<\/a>\u00a0at the age of 48, just over a year after being\u00a0diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer<\/a>. Dane, the celebrated actor best known for his roles on TV shows Grey\u2019s Anatomy\u00a0and\u00a0Euphoria\u00a0and who later in life became an advocate for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) awareness,\u00a0died on Feb. 19 at the age of 53<\/a>, less than a year after he announced his diagnosis<\/a>. He starred in movies like Valentine\u2019s Day, Marley & Me and Burlesque.<\/p>\n

Robert Carradine, who starred in Lizzie McGuire\u00a0and\u00a0Revenge of the Nerds, died at the age of 71 on Feb. 23<\/a>, his family announced. Carradine\u2019s family confirmed his death in a statement to Deadline<\/a>, noting that the actor \u201cstruggled for two decades with Bipolar Disorder<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner, an \u201980s and \u201990s television star best known for playing the role of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show,\u00a0died at the age of 54 on July 20<\/a>. The actor drowned while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He had 19 movie roles over his career.<\/p>\n

Wendt, who played the affable, beer-loving barfly Norm on the hit 1980s TV comedy Cheers<\/a>\u00a0and later crafted a stage career that took him to Broadway in\u00a0Art,\u00a0Hairspray\u00a0and\u00a0Elf, died on May 20 at the age of 76<\/a>. He appeared in more than two dozen movies.<\/p>\n

Chamberlain, who starred in the 1960s television series Dr. Kildare and was an award-winning \u201cking of the miniseries,\u201d died of complications following a stroke<\/a> on March 29 at the age of 90.<\/p>\n

Bardot, the French 1960s sex symbol who became one of the greatest screen sirens of the 20th century and later a militant animal rights activist and far-right supporter, died on Dec. 28 at the age of 91<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although the stars were skipped during the broadcast, they were included on the Oscars\u2019 in memoriam website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Crystal opened the Oscars\u2019 in memoriam segment with his tribute to Reiner. The pair first met\u00a0in 1975 when he guest-starred on All in the Family.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it went so well, Rob said, \u2018It was so much fun playing your best friend, why don\u2019t we keep it going?’\u201d Crystal recalled. \u201cAnd it was a thrill seeing him evolve from a great comic actor to a master storyteller.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crystal recounted such Reiner films as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, Say Anything\u00a0and This is Spinal Tap. The segment ended with more than a dozen stars from those films, including Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland, Fred Savage, Demi Moore, John Cusack and Ione Skye, standing together on stage.<\/p>\n

Reiner, an actor-director, and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, both in their 70s, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home<\/a> last December. Their son, Nick Reiner<\/a>, has been charged in the deaths of his parents<\/a> and has pleaded not guilty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following up Crystal, Streisand, who at 83 has largely retired from touring and live performances due to her well-known stage fright, made an exception to remember Redford.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a brilliant, subtle actor,\u201d she said. \u201cWe had a wonderful time playing off each other because we never knew what the other was going to do or say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Streisand described Redford as \u201cthoughtful and bold,\u201d saying, \u201cI called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Redford died in September at age 89<\/a>. In 1981, he won a best director Oscar for Ordinary People. He and Streisand made one movie together, The Way We Were, in 1973.<\/p>\n

McAdams then paid tribute to women who had died, singling out O\u2019Hara and Keaton.<\/p>\n
