(Off-screen, Parker was holding up her phone, showing that she was streaming his brand-new album, and pointing to her earphones, and smiling.)Then the video goes all wonky. Parker told People that Styles <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/harry-styles-fans-viral-nyc-bridge-appearance-exclusive-11924133\">asked for her name and which song she was listening to<\/a> (\u201cDance No More\u201d), thanked her for listening, and shook their hands before he and Kravitz carried on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"87\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf2001c3b7bcq3e5igc@published\">As a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehairpinarchives.com\/tag\/the-other-ones\/\">devoted fan and scholar of fan encounters<\/a>\u2014that is, a person who loves some celebrities enough that many an algorithm has learned to serve me every scrap of content about them\u2014I rate this one as <em>Nearly<\/em> <em>perfect<\/em>. Parker\u2019s attempt at contact is subtle, and ignorable\u2014Styles could have very easily smiled and kept walking. Instead, <em>he <\/em>chose to engage. There was a genuine coincidence at play here, too, one that would plausibly interest Styles himself. The result is a genuine moment of connection, thrilling for all involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"92\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf2001d3b7brsix755j@published\">What keeps this encounter from being perfect? Unfortunately, the video evidence is a big red FAILURE of human connection. It takes that genuine moment and sullies it for social currency. Cool: a 10-second interaction with your fav during album release week that doesn\u2019t ask for his time and remains a nice moment between two people. Deeply uncool: secretly videoing that interaction. That video shouldn\u2019t exist, and that it does, and that I\u2019ve seen it, takes this interaction into the category that basically every celebrity encounter you hear about belongs in: loser territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"114\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf2001e3b7b4uudked3@published\">The video, charming as it may be in some respects, is one of approximately 1 billion pieces of fan-generated visual evidence of Styles existing out in the world. In many of them, he\u2019s mugging with random people on the streets. (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVwTfK-EbIj\/?img_index=1\">These<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVwdiDDEVOM\/\">are<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVwTh_EEYHK\/\">all<\/a> from a singular outing last week in Midtown Manhattan.) Others are candids: blurry pictures of Harry <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DP4SxvjjwK8\/\">walking<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cw0ofYnrEep\/\">cycling<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C53sP5rMD7u\/\">riding the train<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DNb2FDCM_dc\/?img_index=1\">chilling on a bench<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C_bHHcbsARp\/?img_index=1\">getting coffee<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOeN760Ea2O\/\">picking up a pizza<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSfrUHtDMig\/\">queueing up at a bookstore<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/X2ZmpAQGKuY\">waiting for the new pope to be announced<\/a>. Rumor has it that he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/13\/society\/harry-styles-walks-the-5-mile-commute-from-brooklyn-to-saturday-night-live-rehearsals\/#:~:text=By,GC%20Images\">commuted to <em>SNL<\/em> rehearsals last week on foot<\/a>; fans certainly have had plenty of opportunities to snap photos of him recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"52\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf3001f3b7byre73eek@published\">Seeing those photos can be thrilling: Stars, they\u2019re just like us. But they\u2019re also embarrassing. I shouldn\u2019t be seeing Styles trying to run an errand or smiling into yet another front-facing camera next to yet another person <em>he does not know<\/em>. Those photos shouldn\u2019t exist. Can\u2019t we just let this man live?<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"142\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf3001g3b7b9a9ubss4@published\">Many people see this fan service\u2014selfies, shaking hands, the exchange of a few words\u2014as part of the job of a public figure, a reasonable cost for the bounties of fame, even a service already bought and paid for with movie tickets and album copies. Some fans will say that if he\u2019s in public, he\u2019s there because he wants to be seen.\u00a0(<em>Look, he\u2019s wearing new shorts from his clothing brand, this is literally a pap run!<\/em>) And yes, a star like Styles knows it\u2019s a de facto part of his job when he leaves the house to be \u201con\u201d and to be gracious to fans\u2014he can and certainly does pay someone, or many someones, to bring coffee, pizza, and news about the pope to him while he sits in his home in London, his home in Tribeca, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/inside-harry-styles-real-estate-portfolio\">or his home in Beverly Hills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"111\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf3001h3b7bhbtdp2jd@published\">If you don\u2019t feel one, tiny, polite photo is \u201charassment,\u201d consider the fact that it is at least <em>part <\/em>of a harassment campaign. A famous person is bombarded with these requests constantly. Justin Bieber opted out of fan photos 10 years ago, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BFPj2VRAvn9\/?taken-by=justinbieber\">posting on Instagram<\/a> that \u201cit\u2019s gotten to the point where people won\u2019t even say hi to me or recognize me as a human, I feel like a zoo animal.\u201d Chappell Roan has done it consistently since her breakout hit in 2024. Just months after she skyrocketed to fame, she<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2024\/08\/chappell-roan-tiktok-video-fame-fans-pop-star.html\"> posted a TikTok<\/a> against fan bullshit. \u201cI don\u2019t want whatever the fuck you think you\u2019re supposed to be entitled to when you see a celebrity,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t give a fuck if you think it\u2019s selfish of me to say no for a photo or your time or a hug. That\u2019s not normal. That\u2019s weird.\u201d (It <em>is <\/em>weird!) <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2018\/01\/emily-blunt-cover-story\">Emily Blunt told Vanity Fair<\/a> in 2018 that she had adopted Frances McDormand\u2019s strategy with selfie requesters: \u201cYou know what? I\u2019ve actually retired from that. But I would like to shake your hand and meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"128\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf4001j3b7bn0p8fpne@published\">Styles, in contrast, has never been this explicit, and I don\u2019t think ever would be, though maybe he should. The \u201crudest\u201d he\u2019s been is responding to filming or selfie-requesting fans <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@harrystyleshd\/video\/7483202476313857326?q=can%20we%20not%20harry%20&amp;t=1773659953216\">politely<\/a>, with \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@emma_s039\/video\/7390718624173935905\">Can we not?<\/a>\u201d In fact, he has said that \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nF2XZuTLA1M\">most people you meet out are wonderful.<\/a>\u201d But I must extrapolate here and say that even if you\u2019re approached by a few wonderful people each time you leave the house, that\u2019s too many wonderful people.\u00a0How many pictures are on how many phones of Harry smiling next to fans? Thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions? Reading between the lines, this is at least somewhat uncomfortable for him: He is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/harry-styles-harrys-house-dont-worry-darling-my-policeman-cover-1397290\/\">deeply private<\/a>, he says, and he loves the fans, he says, and he wants to live his life, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"122\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf4001k3b7bwd2s8o4u@published\">I love celebrities. I love gossip. I love celebrity interviews and press tours and thinking about two of my favs kissing each other. I love being an adult and knowing that none of this has <em>anything<\/em> to do <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2020\/10\/psychology-of-the-pandemic-crush.html\">with the actual people in question<\/a>. I love knowing I have nothing to say to these people. I love knowing they have nothing to say to me. I love keeping the fourth wall between celebrity and fan utterly and completely intact. Harry hints at his understanding of this dynamic in a line on his new album. And harassing celebrities just wasn\u2019t compatible with the kind of life that I wanted to live, i.e., a life of respecting people and the rock-solid fourth wall between celebrity and fan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"111\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf5001n3b7bzsskk9gg@published\">I told him that it was important to me that he never approach a celebrity in my presence. He laughed, thinking I was joking, a bit of banter. His confusion was perhaps warranted. He knew I spent many hours a day consuming content about various former members of One Direction. Was I really telling him that I wouldn\u2019t ask Harry Styles for a selfie if I saw him on the street? I told him that I was. I haven\u2019t gotten to test that theory with Styles, but we lived in the West Village for many years and encountered many famous people in the neighborhood\u2014and we both managed to play it cool.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"68\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmmte7hf5001o3b7bzyfzvsy3@published\">But here\u2019s what would happen if Styles did pass us as we walked down the street:\u00a0 I\u2019d smile at him, and then I\u2019d grab Matt\u2019s arm hard enough to leave a mark.
