John Oliver dedicated the main segment of Sunday\u2019s episode of \u201cLast Week Tonight\u201d not to a topic but to a person: Vice President JD Vance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI know to some Vance might appear to be just another abrasive MAGA asshole with a load-bearing beard, but to many on the right, he\u2019s a towering intellect,\u201d Oliver pointed out as he picked apart Vance\u2019s rise to become Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s right-hand man, a trajectory he said was particularly surprising given Vance\u2019s former disdain for the president.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Oliver aired a video of a pre-MAGA Vance striking a comparatively nuanced tone, which he said was \u201cstrange to see\u201d from \u201ca guy who\u2019s since become such a troll.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then came the damning analogy:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt would be like finding old videos of your dog eating with a fork and a knife. \u2018What the fuck?!? Yesterday I watched you take a shit and then eat it mouth first. How on earth did we get from this to that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Oliver dissected Vance\u2019s ambition and opportunism and suggested he had become \u201cthe archetype of the hyperonline conservative troll, right down to the whole, \u2018Kidding, not kidding, trigger the libs shtick.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Oliver also warned viewers not to be fooled by Vance, citing what had been hailed as his \u201crational\u201d performance during the 2024 vice presidential debate with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s \u201cso important to remember who JD Vance actually is\u201d because, said Oliver: \u201cHe\u2019ll present himself as an anti-elitist man of the people but much of his career has been bankrolled by tech billionaires, he\u2019ll go to bat for Alex Jones, arguing we should show grace to those who are 40% right, but he\u2019ll happily co-sign on childless people being sociopaths and the left being un-humans. He\u2019ll offer empathy and understanding when it comes to non-conventional thinkers, but has no problem deriding immigrants as a net negative on society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
