Penn, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d has been an outspoken advocate for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people since Russia launched a war on the country in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The actor met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy not long after Russia invaded and gave him his first Oscar statuette, which he earned for his performance in \u201cMystic River,\u201d The Hollywood Reporter recently reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Penn, at the time, said that he hoped Zelenskyy would accept the \u201csymbolic silly thing\u201d from him and \u201cbring it back to Malibu<\/a>\u201d when Ukraine defeated Russia in the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After Penn was a no-show Sunday, presenter Kieran Culkin accepted the actor\u2019s most-recent statuette in his absence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The New York Times, citing two sources familiar with Penn\u2019s travel plans, said it wasn\u2019t clear what the actor planned to do in Ukraine or where he would be in the country. The newspaper noted that there \u201cremained some possibility\u201d that Penn\u2019s travel plans may have changed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His absence at Sunday\u2019s ceremony comes after he skipped the BAFTAs and the Actor Awards earlier this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Penn\u2019s third statuette puts him in the same company as Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan, all of whom are tied for the most acting wins by a male actor at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
