{"id":2332594,"date":"2026-03-17T03:55:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T03:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2332594"},"modified":"2026-03-17T03:55:36","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T03:55:36","slug":"guitarist-talks-new-solo-album-radiohead-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/guitarist-talks-new-solo-album-radiohead-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Guitarist Talks New Solo Album, Radiohead Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEd O\u2019Brien is just getting back from a post-dinner stroll near his home in Wales when he logs onto Zoom. \u201cIt\u2019s a very dark, still night,\u201d he says. \u201cWent for a lovely walk as the light faded in the Welsh hills.\u201d Around this time of year, as winter turns toward spring, it tends to get muddy, but he doesn\u2019t mind. \u201cIt\u2019s earthy,\u201d he adds. \u201cThere\u2019s healing in this land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tO\u2019Brien, 57, speaks with the same calm warmth and sense of hidden depths that he has brought to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/radiohead\/\" id=\"auto-tag_radiohead\" data-tag=\"radiohead\">Radiohead<\/a>\u2019s music for decades. As a founding member of the acclaimed British band, he\u2019s made crucial contributions on guitar and backing vocals to songs from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LCJblaUkkfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cStreet Spirit (Fade Out)\u201d<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pcEJyvv6_kc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cWeird Fishes\/Arpeggi\u201d<\/a> and beyond, more than earning his place in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/radiohead-interview-rock-hall-815509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a>, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s list of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-guitarists-1234814010\/jonny-greenwood-and-ed-obrien-1234814340\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greatest Guitarists of All Time<\/a>, and millions of fans\u2019 hearts. But he\u2019s never opened up the way he does on <em>Blue Morpho<\/em>, the solo album he\u2019s preparing to release on May 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Blue Morpho<\/em> is technically the second album O\u2019Brien has released outside Radiohead, coming after 2020\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-ed-obrien-earth-radiohead-984402\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Earth<\/em><\/a>, which he presented to the world under the name <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ed-obrien-new-album-radiohead-987247\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EOB<\/a>, but in many ways its strikingly personal tone and daring creative risks make it feel like a debut. The story of its creation, which he\u2019s discussing for the first time in this candid hour-plus conversation, is one of equally profound sadness and renewal. Listening back to the album recently, he felt good about what he\u2019d done. \u201cIt felt honest,\u201d he says, \u201cand at the end of the day, that\u2019s the most important thing for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tO\u2019Brien spent more than four years making <em>Blue Morpho<\/em>, starting not long after the April 2020 release of <em>Earth<\/em>. As the world shut down and panicked in those early weeks of the pandemic, he and his family were comfortably ensconced at home in Wales. \u201cIt was spring, it was summer, it was novelty,\u201d he says. But by the following year, after a second lockdown that the family spent in London, he was feeling unmoored. He refers to the period that followed alternately as a \u201cmidlife crisis\u201d or \u201cmy dark night of the soul,\u201d alluding to the 16th-century Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross. Whatever you call it, it\u2019s clear that this was a painful time for him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI went into a deep depression,\u201d he says frankly. \u201cIt was the first time in my life that I had to stop. And what I realized was that I\u2019d been keeping busy, like a lot of people do, running from these ghosts of my past, particularly from my childhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tO\u2019Brien was just 17 years old in 1985, when he and four classmates at a boys\u2019 school in Oxfordshire started the band that became Radiohead. By their mid-twenties, they were one of the hottest groups in the U.K., and their career gained momentum at a dizzying rate from there. \u201cFrom 1990 or \u201991 through to 2018, when we stopped touring and went on hiatus, it was pretty much nonstop,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s all-encompassing and it demands your full attention, and it\u2019s addictive in that way. But it\u2019s not necessarily healthy, because you just keep going, keep going, keep going. And then when you stop, suddenly the ghosts catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((683\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Steve Gullick*<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWith endless time on his hands, he found himself remembering what it was like to grow up in the Britain of the late 1970s, a generation removed from the end of the Second World War. \u201cThere was no therapy for children. Emotions weren\u2019t talked about,\u201d he says. \u201cMy parents split up when I was young, and it was good that they did split up, but no one ever asked my sister and I, \u2018How are you?\u2019 No one ever said, \u2018Are you OK?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tYears later, in 2021, O\u2019Brien was aware that he\u2019d led a very lucky life as a member of what is quite plausibly the greatest <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rock\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rock\" data-tag=\"rock\">rock<\/a> band of the modern era. \u201cI know I\u2019ve won the fucking golden ticket,\u201d O\u2019Brien says. \u201cIf you told my 14-year-old self, \u2018You\u2019re going to be in this band with these incredible people and you\u2019re going to make this music\u2019 \u2014 it does not get better than that. What are we going to make <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/radiohead-kid-a-tribute-rob-sheffield-1067916\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">next<\/a>?\u2019 Bang, bang. The problem is, when you get into your fifties, it\u2019s fucking unsustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAS HE SAT WITH these thoughts and the months stretched on, he sank into a gloom that, at its worst, felt like it would never lift. \u201cIt was really hard,\u201d O\u2019Brien says. \u201cSome days you just didn\u2019t want to get out of bed. I thought, \u2018Will this be with me forever?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe wasn\u2019t interested in medication or traditional therapy. Instead, he found solace in working on new music without any set goal in mind, playing guitar for a good chunk of every day. \u201cMy therapy was literally locking myself in a room for three hours in the morning whilst the kids were homeschooling and my wife was working,\u201d he says. \u201cI was in such a dark place, but I knew that I had to get up each day, get out of bed, and do this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe other key to his emotional recovery was getting back in touch with nature, a process he describes as \u201ca deep spiritual awakening\u201d rooted in the ancient landscape of Wales. \u201cI\u2019d take our dog, Ziggy, and we\u2019d go off and walk,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are a lot of places of spiritual significance in this land, whether it\u2019s an old monastery or abbey, or a mountain or a waterfall. Tolkien used to vacation in the region.) He thought about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/kate-bush\/\">Kate Bush<\/a>, too. He started to invite his friend Luke Mullen, a keyboardist, over to his music room to see what transpired: \u201cMe on guitar, him on Rhodes. We\u2019d light a fire and just play and jam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSoon O\u2019Brien was feeling lighter, less burdened, more engaged. \u201cThe most challenging bit, and the bit that I find fascinating and full of mystery, is the songwriting bit. You get so excited seeing this one little thing you can play on the guitar, you suddenly hear this whole piece\u2026. <em>Music<\/em> and <em>magic<\/em>, five letters, they share the same three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOne of the first songs that took form was \u201cIncantations,\u201d the gorgeous, slow-burning spell that opens <em>Blue Morpho<\/em>. \u201cWhen I was in this dark place, I felt like I was lost in a labyrinth,\u201d he says, referencing the Greek myth that featured prominently in the artwork for Radiohead\u2019s 2001 masterpiece <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-pictures\/radiohead-kid-a-amnesiac-artwork-1252016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Amnesiac<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018How the fuck do I get out of here?\u2019 And it was a bit like Theseus following Ariadne\u2019s thread. The thread is your gut feeling; it\u2019s small moves, because you can\u2019t see ahead of you, and you have to slay the Minotaur on the way. Maybe that\u2019s the ego, this persona and all these fears you have. You have to slay the beast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn the loose, funky groove \u201cTeachers,\u201d O\u2019Brien tried to evoke the sensations he\u2019d felt on a psilocybin trip with some close friends in England\u2019s Dartmoor National Park. \u201cEvery year, we\u2019ve had three days in the woods and sat around the fire and we\u2019ve done mushrooms,\u201d he says. \u201cI had a very profound experience one night when I left everyone and went walking. The things I saw, it was almost like the veil was removed.\u201d Over burbling bass played by Yves Fernandez, O\u2019Brien nods to the opening lines of Dante\u2019s <em>Inferno<\/em>: \u201cMidway through life, I\u2019ve just lost my way.\u201d \u201cThat was exactly it,\u201d he says now. \u201cI did lose my way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe got further into recording in London in 2022 with producer Paul Epworth, known for his work with acts like Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Paul McCartney. Gradually, he assembled a group of highly skilled backing musicians with jazz chops, including guitarist Dave Okumu and flautist Shabaka Hutchings, who introduced him to the calming properties of instruments tuned to the 432 Hz frequency. The Estonian composer T\u00f5nu K\u00f5rvits wrote swirling, iridescent string arrangements; Radiohead\u2019s Philip Selway played drums on two tracks. O\u2019Brien took a break from recording to help his 18-year-old son prepare for his A-level exams, then got back to it. The final mixes for <em>Blue Morpho<\/em>, named after a species of butterfly he\u2019d seen during his family\u2019s time living in Brazil in the early 2010s, wrapped almost exactly a year ago. \u201cIt\u2019s been a really beautiful journey,\u201d he says. \u201cThis record has taken a long time, but I wouldn\u2019t change it, because there\u2019s been so much life in the record, and that has added to the richness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAS O\u2019BRIEN PUT those finishing touches on <em>Blue Morpho<\/em> in early 2025, the world was starting to buzz with speculation about new activity from his other band. Last fall, those rumors came gloriously true when Radiohead reunited for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/radiohead-2025-tour-opener-review-madrid-1235432512\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 triumphant concerts<\/a> across five cities in Europe. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/harry-styles\/\">Harry Styles<\/a> spoke for many when he recently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/harry-styles-kiss-all-the-time-disco-occasionally-takeaways-1235526233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recalled<\/a> the joyous feeling in the crowd when he saw them in Berlin, an experience he credited with inspiring his own return to the stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe five old friends who make up Radiohead felt much the same, O\u2019Brien says. \u201cThat tour was very, very emotional, very profound. We all felt that. We\u2019d look at one another on that stage, like, \u2018This is amazing.\u2019 I feel like I\u2019m the luckiest person on the planet, and I\u2019m not just saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe wasn\u2019t always that thankful. After Radiohead\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/radiohead-2018-tour-concert-review-699529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous tour<\/a> concluded in the summer of 2018, he was ready for a break from the band he\u2019d spent his entire adult life in. \u201cI was done with Radiohead,\u201d he says. \u201cIt had got to a place where I just wasn\u2019t enjoying it. I just didn\u2019t resonate with it anymore, and I wanted to do my own thing\u2026 I think we\u2019d run out of road. We\u2019d run out of inspiration.\u201d The sessions for 2016\u2019s <em>A Moon-Shaped Pool <\/em>had been <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/radioheads-rhapsody-in-gloom-ok-computer-20-years-later-121093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">difficult<\/a>, and he\u2019d been reluctant to play the two years of shows that followed. \u201cThe others said they wanted to tour,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t really want to tour, and they knew that. But I did it and I\u2019m glad I did. I saw it through to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe long hiatus that came next was new territory. \u201cIt was kind of scary at first,\u201d O\u2019Brien says. \u201cI really thought that was it on Radiohead. Actually, I sort of got off on that. I was just, \u2018I\u2019m done with it. I want another life.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut the years he spent walking in the Welsh hills and working on <em>Blue Morpho<\/em> changed his perspective, and in 2024, he joined Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, and Selway at a rehearsal room to explore the idea of reuniting. \u201cWe hadn\u2019t played together for six years,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re like, \u2018How do we know if we\u2019re going to be any good?\u2019 And the chemistry was there from the very beginning. O\u2019Brien answers without hesitation. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely happening. What we\u2019re going to do is, every year we\u2019re going to do a different continent, and we\u2019re going to do 20 shows each year.
