The Lake H\u0101wea musician, who is performing with her band The Back Road Revolution in Gore this weekend, released her latest album,\u00a0Wooden Leg<\/em>\u00a0in January.<\/p>\n It follows a seven-album discography over her 20-plus year music career.<\/p>\n Van Riel said her new album has been 10 years in the making and includes psychedelic, folk, blues and jazz genres.<\/p>\n “I feel like it\u2019s the right time in motherhood to go there again.<\/p>\n “I am so pumped to be back,” she said.<\/p>\n Returning to adult music, Ms Van Riel said her voice has changed a lot.<\/p>\n “My voice has developed and changed, it\u2019s a lot warmer and more mature,” she said.<\/p>\n Van Riel has recorded five of her albums, including her latest, with musician and sound engineer Danny Fairley in Lake H\u0101wea.<\/p>\n “We have created some really cool stuff together that I am so proud of,” she said.<\/p>\n “Performing in the children\u2019s sector worked for me and my family and meant I could stay close to home.<\/p>\n “Folk, jazz and blues is my passion, so I feel pumped to be releasing this album for grown-ups,” she said.<\/p>\n The title\u00a0Wooden Leg<\/em>\u00a0gained its name from the final track on the album which Van Riel wrote with a pair of American travellers during a song-writing exercise while staying on her family\u2019s property.<\/p>\n “I had always taken inspiration from\u00a0Wooden Ships<\/em>, a song by Jefferson Airplane.<\/p>\n “Listening to that song as a teenager in W\u0101naka was pivotal for me.<\/p>\n “I would think one day I\u2019m going to have an album that feels like this, it\u2019s a full-circle of my dream,” she said.<\/p>\n
