The Pulitzer Prize-winning work is known worldwide, with frequent revivals generating new fans across generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">But few know that \u201cOur Town,\u201d at least in part, is our town: Madison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Although the story is set on the East Coast, Thornton Wilder\u2019s nephew, Tappan Wilder, said Wilder\u2019s early life in Madison inspired parts of \u201cOur Town.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cHe meant for \u2018Our Town\u2019 to be about everywhere,\u201d said<\/span> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Tappan Wilder.<\/span> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cIt&#8217;s set in a small town, and it explodes into a universal statement about life, but it&#8217;s influenced by his experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">The story follows two families over the course of 12 years in the early 1900s and is set in the fictional town of Grover\u2019s Corners, New Hampshire. It follows the characters through several stages of life: birth, life, courtship, marriage and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cOur Town\u201d was adapted as an opera by composer Ned Rorem and librettist J.D. McClatchy in 2005. It premiered at Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">The operatic production is coming to<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/music.wisc.edu\/university-opera\/\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">University Opera<\/span><\/a> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">on March 20 for a four-day run in Music Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Wilder was born in 1897 in Madison, where his father, Amos Parker Wilder, was editor and part owner of the Wisconsin State Journal before his work as a diplomat took the family to China and Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Tappan Wilder, 86, was his uncle\u2019s literary executor for 25 years and currently runs the Wilder estate. Tappan Wilder has a personal connection to Madison as well, having received a master\u2019s<\/span> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">in American history from UW-Madison. Costumes were designed by Kenneth Hoversten and lighting is by Matt Albrecht. Although students are not involved as designers, some of the designers have students working under them on the production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Although he knew Wilder\u2019s family had Madison roots, Ronis was surprised when he got a call from a member of the Wilder clan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cTappan called the School of Music. He told the administrative staff that he was thrilled we were doing this and that he\u2019d like to know more,\u201d he said. \u201cWe knew of the Madison connection, but Tappan reached out and wanted to express his delight, be connected to the production and to send some of his people to see it. That was really wonderful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">During his life, Wilder resisted attempts to adapt \u201cOur Town\u201d as an opera. But as literary executor of his estate, Tappan Wilder decided to work with Rorem and McClatchy to create the opera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cThe one thing my uncle never did was tie the hands of the future,\u201d Tappan Wilder said. \u201cHe didn&#8217;t say, \u2018Even after I go, right, yeah, I never want \u2018Our Town\u2019 to be turned into an opera.\u2019 data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201d and \u201cThe Alcestiad,\u201d both based on two of his own plays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cThe central theme of the show is that we don\u2019t fully experience our lives while we\u2019re living them, and the dead only understand this in retrospect after they\u2019re dead,\u201d Tappan Wilder said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">There has been a huge surge in opera writing in the last 25 years, and \u201cOur Town\u201d is an example of that, Ronis said. One recent opera, \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scottgendel.com\/works\/opera\/everlasting-faint\/\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Everlasting Faint<\/span><\/a><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">,\u201d created by composer Scott Gendel and librettist Sandra Flores, had its<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/entertainment\/arts-and-theatre\/a-ghost-rises-in-madison-opera-s-splendid-everlasting-faint\/article_2c665842-34ff-4d89-86a2-483762bf3c94.html\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">world premiere<\/span><\/a> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">at<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.madisonopera.org\/\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">Madison Opera<\/span><\/a> <span data-mce-mark=\"1\">last year. Joining the panel of UW theater and orchestra experts will be Chip Kidd, who is the widower of \u201cOur Town\u201d librettist J.D. McClatchy and is considered to be one of the most influential book cover designers of all time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201cOur Town\u201d runs March 20, 21, 22 and 24 and will be University Opera\u2019s last performance in Music Hall. Next fall, the class will run productions in Shannon Hall.
