Playwright and director Paige Hernandez adapted the children\u2019s book \u201cTiara\u2019s Hat Parade<\/strong>\u201d by Kelly Starling Lyons for the stage, inspired by its themes of kindness, familial support and pursuing creative passions. The one-woman show stars Lydia Danielle playing multiple characters, including Tiara, whose mother makes one-of-a-kind hats but closes her business after a big-box store moves in. The show is being staged by Children\u2019s Theater of Madison at MYArts, 1055 E. Mifflin St. It\u2019s 60 minutes long and intended for audiences ages 5 and up. Tickets are $48.20.<\/p>\n

Dayton St. Last weekend, Madison Memorial beat Verona in the sectional finals, the first time the team has reached the Division 1 state tournament in nearly a decade. That\u2019s the story behind the musical \u201cMiss Door County<\/strong>\u201d by Nathan Fosbinder, described as \u201can Americana, folk-pop-musical theater love letter to the Midwest.\u201d Music Theatre of Madison presents a reading of the play at the Sunrise Theater at MYArts, 1055 E. Now in its 19th year, Line Breaks<\/strong> is an interdisciplinary hip hop festival highlighting the work of student artists in UW-Madison\u2019s First Wave (a hip hop scholarship program) and professional artists as they investigate \u201ccontemporary American culture through the lens of hip hop performance.\u201d This year\u2019s theme is \u201cactivation,\u201d and the idea of \u201cartistic expression as something already encoded within us.\u201d Line Breaks kicks off with a community showcase at the Madison Central Public Library, 201 W. Mifflin St., and continues through the month with exhibits and pop-up events.<\/p>\n

Hump!<\/strong> bills itself as \u201cThe best dirty little film festival in the world.\u201d Founded by author and sex columnist (and former Four Star Video Heaven employee) Dan Savage, the festival presents sex-positive short films showing \u201cintimacy is culture and that audiences are hungry for work that is bold, funny, handmade and deeply human.\u201d The festival starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Ave. Tickets are $25.<\/p>\n

The Doric String Quartet<\/strong> takes listeners back in time, performing \u201cperiod-inspired interpretations of the classical repertoire\u201d \u2014 they even have custom bows that quartet member John Myerscough once described as like getting an energy mushroom in a game of Super Mario. The quartet will perform compositions from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven at Shannon Hall, 800 Langdon St., as part of the Wisconsin Union Theater\u2019s Classical Series. Tickets range from $39 to $69, with exceptions for students and faculty.<\/p>\n
