First Line Films announced today that its upcoming historical drama \u201cAs Deep as the Grave<\/a>\u201d (formerly known as \u201cCanyon of the Dead<\/a>\u201d) will, per an official press release, \u201cfeature actor Val Kilmer<\/a> posthumously; a first-ever performance enabled by generative AI.\u201d You can get a first look at the gen-ai-aided \u201cKilmer<\/a>\u201d above.<\/p>\n

The release also tells us that \u201cKilmer was originally cast in the role of Father<\/a> Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist who was a historical figure at the San Juan Mission in Farmington, Nm, and that the actor, who passed away in April of 2025, \u201cwas unable to film due to his deteriorating health condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while Kilmer was \u201cunable\u201d to film any of the project, he will still \u201cstar\u201d (\u201cperform\u201d? \u201cappear\u201d?) in the feature, thanks (?) to generative artificial intelligence. The film has been in post-production for the past three years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
