While he wraps a turban around his head, a little boy picks up the camera, introduces himself, and, repeating after Alhousseyni, says, \u201cI am a child of the desert.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The boy entertains me for a while, then Alhousseyni takes the phone back, walks through a spacious room, into a yard, and then to a car. He places the phone behind the steering wheel and starts to drive. <\/p>\n<p><!-- placeholder(#1) --><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span> was a beautiful experience for me. It\u2019s the first time we recorded an album in Tamanrasset,\u201d he says. A cultural, economic, and administrative hub, the oasis city in southern Algeria is often referred to as Algeria\u2019s Tuareg capital. It\u2019s a good place to find and inspire all kinds of Tuareg musicians for a collaborative project like Hoggar.<\/figcaption><figcaption itemprop=\"author\" class=\"\" data-byline-prefix=\"Photo\">by Marie Planeille<\/figcaption><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span> was recorded at Aboogie, the studio of <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane<\/span>, commonly known as <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Sadam<\/span>. He is the lead singer of the Tuareg band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/imarhans-new-album-essam-blends-tuareg-and-electronic-music\/1421600\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Imarhan<\/span><\/a> and a cousin of Tinariwen\u2019s <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Eyadou Ag Leche<\/span>, and he made it possible for Tinariwen to record at home with professional gear for the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This tenth studio album is a musical and visual journey through eleven tracks, including some old Tinariwen songs that have never been recorded before. Their message of resistance still rings as true today as it did several decades ago, blending their signature desert blues assouf with local rhythms, Sudanese music, and the call-and-response vocals of their community members. <\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"b0448fd4-47f7-4925-ad6c-429e4d1d1f58\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Snu2cGohYC4\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The little boy\u2019s head pops into the screen from the car\u2019s backseat, eyeing the phone with curiosity. Alhousseyni continues to look ahead, but his lips betray an amused smile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the opportunity to invite a Sudanese singer, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Sulafa Elyas<\/span>, and that\u2019s probably my favorite song on the album,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s important for us to emphasize the link and similarities between Tuareg and Sudanese music.\u201d I tell him that I am Sudanese, and he laughs in pleasant surprise. \u201cI\u2019m a big fan of Sudanese music, I\u2019ve always wanted to make music with an artist from there,\u201d he says. \u201cMy biggest influences are from Sudan, Mauritania, and country music.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you like to see the mountains in Tamanrasset?\u201d he asks, flipping the camera. \u201cLook, look! This one is called Adrian.\u201d He is driving through an arid landscape shortly before sunset, with the mountains on the horizon glowing in the day\u2019s last sunrays. The album\u2019s title, <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span>, is named after these very same mountains, a unifying place and ancestral home. <\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"cdcae2ea-f006-4385-903d-f454ee1629e5\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/t2q8g8U5als\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, tracks like \u201cImidiwan Takyadam\u201d and \u201cErghad Afewo\u201d address the difficulty of being refugees scattered across the land and the disunity that has plagued the Tuareg community. \u201cIn the north of Mali, there are those who fight for the Azawad state, and those who are with the Malian army, and even other groups, and they all disagree with each other,\u201d explains Alhousseyni. <\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"1c4f182a-ad56-4a39-8cc2-41ec1ddced89\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/cXD942EWVlM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The process of recording <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span> centered on bringing the community together, as heard in the choir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an artist, you write songs and poetry when you\u2019re young, and when you get older, it\u2019s hard to recreate that special energy,\u201d says Alhousseyni about inviting younger generations to collaborate on the album. \u201cIn our culture, we pass the torch early, rather than waiting until the last minute. We have a lot to tell young musicians about nature, animals, education, suffering, colonization, and life in the desert.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tinariwen wants to ensure that future generations feel involved in and invested in Tuareg heritage. There will be some revolutionaries among them, and Alhousseyni hopes they will choose to resist and defend the Tuaregs&#8217; cause in the way they see fit. Being a part of recording <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span> with a new lineup and energy was very inspiring,\u201d he tells <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">OkayAfrica<\/span>. \u201cThey returned to the basics, and it brought back a lot of memories from my childhood.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He cherishes the moments when Tinariwen, members of the Tuareg band <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Terakraft<\/span>, and local women singers would drink tea and play dominoes like one big family. \u201cIt felt like being in a movie, or a dream come true,\u201d he says. \u201cThe whole scene was reunited in one place, making history in a simple, modest way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadam does not feel like the torch has been passed to his generation with <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span>. To him, this album is a continuum of the tradition: Tuareg music has always been made in community, with everyone playing a role according to their age. \u201cThe old inspire the young, and the young bring new energy to go further,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"5acae92d-0616-4f6a-8736-c64f91ef40ff\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/adh68TKh4ws\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Going further does not necessarily mean that younger generations will become even more political; sometimes it means the exact opposite. \u201cHistory repeats itself,\u201d says Sadam. \u201cThe <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/some-love-songs-are-more-than-just-romance\/1423434\">love<\/a> stories in our songs stay the same, and the political issues Tuaregs face tend to repeat themselves, too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the problems addressed in Tinariwen\u2019s music remain unresolved, younger generations may not have much political input to offer. Sadam believes that, rather than echoing Tinariwen, they can take the music itself further.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTinariwen has said everything already, but sometimes we can raise issues differently in our poetry about daily life,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes we can take a more optimistic view and talk about good things like love and relationships and how our communication has changed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, one of Sadam\u2019s favorite songs on the album, \u201cAba Malik,\u201d criticizes the crimes that the Russian mercenary group Wagner is committing in Azawad. Featuring a song that so urgently meets the contemporary moment alongside timeless tracks about the kindness we must share for one another is a testament to Tinariwen\u2019s unique ability to grasp the complexity of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/yennayer-a-playlist-for-the-amazigh-new-year\/1421238\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Tuareg life<\/a>, both sonically and thematically.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"278e7105-7b2c-40e8-8b0a-e5f0dd0794ad\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/sfrl-2aovXg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One of the traditions Tinariwen are eager to uphold is to honor women as the historical custodians of Tuareg music. \u201cIn 1973, there was a big drought, and a lot of Tuaregs moved to cities in Mauritania and Niger where their lifestyles changed,\u201d says Alhousseyni. \u201cIn cities, it was not as easy for women to play music, because they used to have more freedom in camps.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Hoggar<\/span>\u2019s visuals not only tell the story of a young man struggling against the state and finding music as a way of resistance, but also of a woman who is undergoing her own journey alongside him.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"22b27b25-2c81-4150-85cb-4266775784cd\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Bg-7or6cILQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy that there\u2019s a new dynamic with young women taking part in recording music,\u201d says Sadam. One of these women is <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Wonou Walet Sidati<\/span>, who previously sang with Tinariwen on their fourth studio album <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Imidiwan<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love music, because it gives us the opportunity to tell our story, talk about how we live and what\u2019s happening out here in the bush,\u201d she tells <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">OkayAfrica<\/span>. \u201cTinariwen are like my brothers, so it was great to reconnect and play music together again. There were a lot of people stopping by [the studio,] young and old. I liked that energy, it\u2019s good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sun is about to set. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to have this much time available during Ramadan,\u201d says Alhousseyn, hinting at how long our conversation has gone on.
