\n\tVariety did a deep dive<\/a> on the partnership, taking a closer look at the dynamic between the streamer and the Sussexes. The report dates back to their early days, when they signed a lucrative five-year deal with Netflix in 2020 following their royal exit. While it was widely believed to be worth $100 millio<\/a>n, sources for the media outlet claimed it was in the $60 million range.<\/p>\n

\n\tEither way, Netflix was eager to get the docuseries Harry & Meghan<\/em> onto the schedule \u2014 but there were a few hiccups. Insiders reported to Variety that \u201cmany at the streamer were annoyed by the lack of communication\u201d when it came to their March 2021 bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.<\/a> The couple\u2019s spokesperson said it was \u201ccategorically false\u201d that Netflix was \u201cblindsided\u201d by the broadcast, but it might have been an interview Netflix wanted the exclusive for. Instead, the show delivered 17.1 million viewers to CBS.<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety<\/em> also reported that Netflix was concerned about Prince Harry\u2019s memoir, Spare<\/em><\/a>, interfering with the docuseries. While the Sussexes\u2019 spokesperson confirmed that Meghan and Harry coordinated the \u201ctiming between book and series,\u201d other insiders talked about Netflix\u2019s co-CEO Ted Sarandos being \u201criled to hear\u201d that they would come out the same month. In the end, Harry & Meghan<\/em>\u2018s complete release was moved up to December 2022, while Harry\u2019s book was shifted to January 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, the report conflicts with what Sarandos told Variety<\/em><\/a> in March 2025 \u2014 he was a fan of the Sussexes.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re a passive partner in Meghan\u2019s company, and it\u2019s a big discovery model for us right now,\u201d Sarandos said last year. \u201cI think Meghan is underestimated in terms of her influence on culture. When we dropped the trailer for the Harry & Meghan<\/em> doc series [in 2022], everything on-screen was dissected in the press for days.\u201d<\/p>\n
