This interviewed has been edited for brevity and clarity.<\/p>\nAP: What kinds of ups and downs did you face that led to your solo album hiatus?<\/p>\n
MIKE WILL MADE-IT: I lost my hard drives, that was a big one. I fulfilled my label deal. \u2026 And then took a step away. I ain’t know I was gonna take this long.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the thing about this industry, too: it\u2019s like, when you’re hot, everybody’s in your face, they\u2019re your \u2018bro,\u2019 they\u2019re rocking with you. And then, if you\u2019re not on them charts or you\u2019re not hot, the conversation\u2019s just a little different. You\u2019re not able to reach the same folks at the same time. That kind of gets discouraging.<\/p>\n
AP: Were you surprised you couldn’t reach artists you worked with before?<\/p>\n
MIKE WILL MADE-IT: It\u2019s surprising, but that\u2019s when you\u2019re not looking at it like business \u2026 This corporation is just doing what they have to do to build and expand. Just because me as a corporation is dormant right now \u2026 it might not make sense for this corporation to (collaborate).<\/p>\n
AP: How did you decide to pair Atlanta legends with rising artists on ‘R3SET?<\/p>\n
MIKE WILL MADE IT: I gotta represent for the town, for this sound that I grew up on \u2026 I filled that position way back in \u201807, \u201908. So now, 2026, like no matter how big the (expletive) gets, every project that I ever went into, from Rihanna to Beyonc\u00e9 to Miley to Jay-Z to Kendrick, I\u2019m always thinking about that sound.<\/p>\n
Even with Miley, I grew up on MTV AM, like crossover records, pop records \u2026 doing that record (\u201c23\u201d) with Miley was like a perfect bridge to that. \u2026 At that time, we were trying to create a new genre called trap pop \u2026 we still were thinking to keep that DNA in there.<\/p>\n
AP: Did you talk with Miley about appearing on this album?<\/p>\n
MIKE WILL MADE-IT: I think I got three songs on her last album. \u2026 Me and Miley got a boatload of records. So, it\u2019s like this specific record, I didn\u2019t really call anybody and say, \u2018Yo, I need you for this album.\u2019 I literally just been working.<\/p>\n
AP: You\u2019ve mentioned AI is being used to create trap beats. Can AI recreate your sounds?<\/p>\n
MIKE WILL MADE-IT: I\u2019m one-of-one \u2026 I don\u2019t think they ever said AI knows how to do magic. You feel me? They can\u2019t do God\u2019s work.<\/p>\n
