Luke Grimes<\/a> had to work up the \u201ccourage\u201d to call his Yellowstone<\/a><\/em> costar, Kelsey Asbille<\/a>, after he learned what Marshals<\/a><\/em> was doing with her character in the CBS<\/a> spinoff. It was a shocking twist revealed in the\u00a0Marshals<\/em> series premiere<\/a> on Sunday, March 1, one that explains why Monica Dutton has been absent from all trailers and promotional materials for the Kayce Dutton-centered series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Grimes admitted that he was \u201cheartbroken\u201d about this plot to TV Insider. He also revealed how Asbille reacted to the news on their call. Asbille has not publicly commented on the Monica storyline as of the time of publication.\u00a0(Warning: Spoilers for the\u00a0Marshals<\/em> series premiere ahead!).<\/strong><\/p>\n

In\u00a0Marshals<\/em>, with the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals<\/a>, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region\u2019s war on violence.<\/p>\n

The first episode revealed that Monica, Kayce\u2019s wife, died of cancer<\/a> in the time between the end of\u00a0<\/a>Yellowstone<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and the beginning of\u00a0Marshals<\/em>. Given the age of their son, Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill<\/a>), not much time has passed between the plots of the two shows, so Monica must have gotten very sick, very fast. Tate was part of a protest demanding that no toxins be dumped into water sources on the Broken Rock reservation in the\u00a0Marshals<\/em> series premiere.<\/p>\n

The toxins are causing higher cancer rates on the reservation, and it\u2019s what killed Monica. Her final resting place was shown in the episode, and Kayce will continue<\/a> to visit it throughout the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was heartbroken for myself and for [Kelsey],\u201d Grimes told us of his reaction to learning the storyline. \u201cIt felt like, \u2018I don\u2019t even know what that would look like doing it without her, what that would feel like.\u2019 Kelsey\u2019s become one of my best friends. She\u2019s the coolest actor I\u2019ve ever worked with. She\u2019s down to earth, sweet, and kind to every other actor and the crew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grimes wasn\u2019t the one to reveal the Monica twist to Asbille. He called her after the fact.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked up the courage to call. I didn\u2019t know how she was going to feel about it. I had to see how she was doing,\u201d Grimes said.<\/p>\n

The call ended up going well, despite Grimes\u2019 fears.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a great conversation,\u201d he said. \u201cIn true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She\u2019s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She\u2019s going to work. That\u2019s not an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grimes and Asbille played a couple for all of\u00a0Yellowstone<\/em>. Their characters\u2019 primary plot revolved around their on-again, off-again relationship and the goings on in their little family as they struggled to decide between distancing themselves from the Dutton family legacy or embracing it.<\/p>\n
