Guest appearances by Amyt Datta, Mainak \u2018Bumpy\u2019 Nag Chowdhury, Sudipto \u2018Buti\u2019 Banerjee, Bodhisattwa Ghosh and John Paul expanded its sonic range.Karma is more than fusion \u2013 it is what Chatterjee calls bandish fusion, where the bandish is reworked while retaining its core. \u201cWhen I started conceptualizing Karma, the word fusion music didn\u2019t really exist,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cI dreamt of a sound people could sing \u2013 fun, yet rooted in raag and taal.\u201d <\/p>\n Karma\u2019s identity<\/span>Chatterjee\u2019s emphasis on melody over calculation defines Karma \u2013 accessible yet rooted. Recalling college influences, he said, \u201cWe listened to Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It was discouraged, but here I am, 40 years later.\u201d This idea of a unified sound sets Karma apart \u2013 less juxtaposition, more absorption. \u201cAs a composer, it\u2019s not very difficult. Suvam, my second son almost, helps bring my ideas to life,\u201d he said. \u201cOur last track Samsara, the final music my brother Subhas Mondol played with us, is very special.\u201d<\/p>\n I always imagined everything coming together as one, not two worlds meeting.
