Click here to subscribe<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Warning: This story contains spoilers for \u201cThe Pitt\u201d Season 2, Episode 11. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n With a true-to-life medical drama like \u201cThe Pitt,\u201d drawing inspiration from a bevy of urgent issues affecting the American health care system and, by extension, the country as a whole, it\u2019s hardly surprising that what\u2019s currently happening in real life inevitably makes its way onto the show.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Up to this point in Season 2, the Emmy-winning series<\/a> has explored everything from the rise of generative AI in medicine to Medicaid cuts resulting from President Donald Trump<\/a> signing the \u201cBig Beautiful Bill<\/a>\u201d into law last summer. But the latter isn\u2019t the only Trump-related issue tackled this season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In this week\u2019s episode, \u201c5:00 P.M.,\u201d the show takes on the administration\u2019s ongoing immigration crackdown<\/a>, as patients and staff at the fictional Pittsburgh hospital find themselves on edge after an unexpected development in the ER: the sudden presence of ICE agents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n They show up midway through the episode with a detainee named Pernita (Ramona DuBarry), claiming she suffered a \u201cnasty fall\u201d down a flight of alley stairs during a sweep at a restaurant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif<\/a>) and Nurse Jesse (Ned Brower) examine Pernita\u2019s fractured shoulder and try to comfort her, it becomes evident that the agents\u2019 presence is disrupting the entire ER. Patients begin fleeing the waiting room, and even two nurses with temporary protected status walk out because \u201cthey just don\u2019t feel safe,\u201d Dr. Shamsi (Deepti Gupta) explains to Robby.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Eventually, Robby goes off and confronts one of the agents about disturbing his already-busy ER, ordering both to wait in a separate room so as not to lose any more patients or staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n However, things take a turn for the worse when the ICE agents try to forcibly remove Pernita from the hospital after she\u2019s discharged to haul her off to a detention center. Jesse intervenes, pushing one of the agents back, but is immediately thrown to the ground and arrested in front of the entire horrified ER.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Both Pernita and Jesse are then taken away, with Robby assuring Jesse that the hospital will find an attorney to get him released. Though with the Fourth of July weekend underway, it\u2019s unclear just how quickly that will happen, or even where he\u2019s being taken to.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n And with the season nearing its end, who knows what will happen to Jesse by the end of this stress-inducing shift.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n This isn\u2019t the first time \u201cThe Pitt\u201d has touched on immigration-related issues this season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In Episode 9, a young boy named Jude (Anthony B. Jenkins) arrived in the ER after losing a few fingers in a freak firework accident. As the episode unfolded, it was revealed that Jude\u2019s home life had been recently upended after his parents were detained and deported to Haiti during a routine immigration appointment, which forced his older sister (Sasha Comp\u00e8re) to step up as his legal guardian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n This has, unfortunately, been the reality for a lot of kids and young people dealing with the Trump administration\u2019s cruel mass detention and deportation efforts that have led to the forced separation of migrant families<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Pernita\u2019s story, too, alludes to what many Americans have witnessed during Trump\u2019s second term, from violent ICE raids<\/a> and deadly citizen shootings<\/a> to ongoing campaigns of terror that continue<\/a> in cities<\/a> across the nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n While the ICE storyline on \u201cThe Pitt\u201d is timely, it only scratches the surface of what remains an ongoing disaster in America. And yet, at a time when immigration enforcement has become increasingly volatile across the country, it\u2019s fitting that a show like \u201cThe Pitt\u201d can still manage to capture the times as we live through them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Ahead of Episode 11\u2019s premiere, executive producer John Wells teased in a February interview on The Town<\/a> that the ICE situation would soon be explored, \u201cbecause it\u2019s a real issue in emergency rooms.\u201d He also shared that the plotline on the HBO Max series had to be scaled back a bit \u201cto make sure it was balanced.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cBut they weren\u2019t saying, \u2018Don\u2019t do this or don\u2019t do that,\u2019\u201d Wells clarified of executives at the streamer. \u201cIn fact, quite the opposite. We showed them a lot of the research, and they were like, \u2018Yeah, that looks like a good story.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe thing we have to be careful about when we\u2019re talking about any of these issues,\u201d he added, \u201cwhen we\u2019re talking about the way in which the health care system works, is to make certain that we\u2019re actually presenting both points of view, because we\u2019re not really in the business of preaching to the choir on this show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In a separate interview with Variety<\/a> last year, \u201cThe Pitt\u201d creator R. Scott Gemmill \u2014 who also served as an executive producer on \u201cER\u201d \u2014 said, \u201cWe take our platform very seriously,\u201d referring to the show\u2019s approach to timely and sensitive subject matter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI think one of the things when you can reach 10 million people \u2014 and this was true back in the day on \u2018ER\u2019 as well \u2014 is with that amount of people listening,\u201d he continued, \u201cyou have to be responsible for what you put out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n So far, audiences have applauded \u201cThe Pitt\u201d for thoughtfully taking on a broad spectrum of issues over the past two seasons \u2014 from violence against health care workers (once again tackled in Episode 11) and ER burnout to cyberattack threats<\/a> and racial bias in hospitals<\/a> to sexual assault exams<\/a>, and even the aftermath of the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Its focus on ICE \u2014 arguably its most controversial storyline thus far \u2014 just underscores how committed the series is to portraying real life in all its harshness, without avoiding difficult conversations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Perhaps \u201cThe Pitt\u201d star Patrick Ball \u2014 who plays Dr. Frank Langdon \u2014 summed it up best when he told Deadline<\/a> how he felt about the series\u2019 ICE storyline this season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWhat we try to do at \u2018The Pitt,\u2019 what we believe \u2018The Pitt\u2019 can be, is a watercooler for people to gather around,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t write policy. We try not to tell people what to think. We try to present the realities of hospitals across America.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cPart of that, these days, is ICE exists in these places,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cPeople that cannot afford health insurance, and therefore come to an ER not being able to afford life-saving care.
