The \u201cDrivers License\u201d singer, who starred on the Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series <\/em>before her music industry breakout, toured her sophomore album Guts <\/em>from early 2024 into July 2025. Although the 23-year-old gave fans a deluxe edition of her sophomore album in March 2024 \u2014 featuring once vinyl-exclusive tracks \u201cObsessed,\u201d \u201cGirl I’ve Always Been,\u201d \u201cScared of My Guitar\u201d and \u201cStranger,\u201d as well as the new song “So American” \u2014\u00a0fans have been eagerly anticipating new music from the Grammy winner. However, it wasn\u2019t until March 2026 that the artist finally began hinting at what her third album will sound like \u2014\u00a0and what topics she will explore.<\/p>\n In a new interview with British Vogue<\/a> released on Thursday, Rodrigo confirmed that songs on her upcoming album will be love songs \u2014\u00a0a stark difference from Sour <\/em>and Guts<\/em>, which spanned topics like jealousy and heartbreak and anger, but rarely swoony love. (The one track that can be considered a love song is \u201cSo American,\u201d a track off the 2024 bonus edition of Guts <\/em>that some speculate is about Brit Louis Partridge<\/a>.)<\/p>\n However, in typical Rodrigo fashion, there\u2019s a darker side to this love: \u201cI realised all my favourite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n One of the things that has made Rodrigo\u2019s work so relatable is her willingness to show her vulnerable side \u2014\u00a0just like she did on her debut single \u201cDrivers License,\u201d in which she sang about another girl being everything she\u2019s \u201cinsecure about,\u201d and later on tracks like Sour<\/em>\u2019s \u201cJealousy, Jealousy\u201d and Guts<\/em>\u2019 \u201cPretty Isn\u2019t Pretty,\u201d in which she reflected on not feeling good enough.<\/p>\n On her next album, Rodrigo said she\u2019s using love as a jumping-off point for talking about her own personal problems. When asked by British Vogue about whether her heightened fame did anything to squash her insecurities, Rodrigo said it did not. \u201cI felt a similar way about falling in love, that the second I\u2019m in a really great relationship, I\u2019m gonna start feeling good about myself and this stuff is going to fall into place, but it just doesn\u2019t work like that,\u201d she explained. The last song on the album is about that realization, according to British Vogue.<\/p>\n Speaking from the Vogue kitchen<\/a>, where the Filipino\u2013American singer made the traditional fried spring rolls lumpia, Rodrigo described the upcoming album as \u201cvaried.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI really wanted to figure out a way to kind of write about joy in this album,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like my last two albums are very, rightfully so, kind of angsty and heartbroken, and just as a creative endeavor. And also \u2018cause I was experiencing a lot of joy in my life, I wanted to figure out how to, like, inject that into the songs that I was making.\u201d<\/p>\n Echoing her previous comments to British Vogue, Rodrigo said, \u201cI think in music, my favorite love songs are love songs that are a little bit sad or have a little bit of, like, wistfulness or mourning or fear or something. And so I kind of set out making this album, like, trying to write a sad love song.\u201d<\/p>\n Rodrigo famously used purple for both her album Sour <\/em>and Guts<\/em> \u2014\u00a0but there are clues she may be shifting into a new color scheme. In March, a mural in Los Angeles<\/a>, photos of which were shared by Rodrigo\u2019s official fan account<\/a>, popped up, featuring the brand-new \u201cOR\u201d logo that also appears on Rodrigo\u2019s website.<\/p>\n While the mural was originally purple, it was eventually re-painted pink.
