Prince William has a \u201dquiet faith\u201d and wants to underline his
\ncommitment to the Church of England ahead of an historic day for
\nthe Anglican communion.<\/p>\n

The heir to the throne is set to attend the installation of the
\nfirst ever female Archbishop of Canterbury this week and ahead of
\nthe momentous event, it\u2019s been reported that William is committed
\nto the Church of England and wants to support it.<\/p>\n

When he becomes king, William will also be the Supreme Governor
\nof the Church of England and be known as Defender of the Faith.
\nWhile Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s devotion to her Christian faith was well
\nknown and King Charles III\u2019s deep interest in his own faith and
\nthat of others is well reported, the spiritual beliefs of the
\ncurrent Prince of Wales have been more keenly debated.<\/p>\n

The Prince\u2019s faith has been in the spotlight in particular since
\nSeptember 2022 when he became heir to the throne and next in line
\nto be Supreme Governor.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the installation of Dame Sarah Mullally as Archbishop
\nof Canterbury, sources close to Prince William have told the Sunday Times<\/a> that the heir
\nto the throne takes his faith and his support of the Church of
\nEngland very seriously indeed.<\/p>\n

And while William has said he is not at church every day, his
\ncommitment to his Christian faith is not in doubt. An aide to the
\nprince told the paper that \u201dthose who know him well recognise that
\nhis connection to the Church and to the sense of duty that comes
\nwith it, runs deep and is grounded in something personal and
\nsincere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source added \u201das he looks ahead to the responsibilities he
\nwill one day assume\u2026he is keen to build a strong and meaningful
\nbond with the Church and its leadership\u201d which \u201drespects tradition
\nwhile speaking to a modern Britain\u201d.<\/p>\n

In February, the
\nPrince and Princess of Wales visited the incoming Archbishop of
\nCanterbury,<\/a> Dame Sarah Mullally,, at her new residence of
\nLambeth Palace where they enjoyed warm discussions.<\/p>\n

Later, the first woman chosen to lead the Church of England said
\n\u201dit was a privilege to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales to
\nLambeth Palace today. I know we hold the same hope for a better
\nworld and I look forward to working together in the years to
\ncome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prince William and the new Archbishop of Canterbury have another
\nshared interest \u2013 they are both big Aston Villa fans.<\/p>\n

Prince William is reported to have been less friendly with
\nArchbishop Sarah\u2019s predecessor at Canterbury, Justin Welby. In
\n2021, the Duchess of Sussex claimed that Justin Welby had been
\ninvolved in a secret marriage ceremony between her and Prince Harry
\nhead of their royal wedding on May 19 2018.<\/p>\n

The duchess told Oprah Winfrey that she and Harry had got
\nmarried three days earlier, saying \u201djust the two of us in our
\nbackyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.\u201d Justin Welby denied
\nthat claim, later saying the legal wedding was on May 19 and adding
\n\u201d\u2018I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and
\nI would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it
\nknowing it was false.\u2019<\/p>\n

Justin Welby resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury following
\ncriticism of his handling of the case of John Smyth, who was a
\nprolific sex abuser.<\/p>\n

Prince William, as heir to the throne, will attend the
\ninstallation of Justin Welby\u2019s successor at Canterbury Cathedral
\nlater this week. It is customary for the first in line to take part
\nin this ceremony. The Princess of Wales will accompany him.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood that Kate has developed a deeper spirituality in
\nrecent months following her diagnosis with cancer in early
\n2024.<\/p>\n
