PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) \u2014 This weekend\u2019s box office could belong to one movie in a big way.<\/p>\n

According to Boxoffice Pro<\/a>, all eyes are on Amazon MGM\u2019s newest release, \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d which is projected to open north of $70 million. If that happens, it would mark the biggest debut of 2026 so far and could become the year\u2019s first true blockbuster.<\/p>\n

The Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film is generating strong early reviews and plenty of buzz heading into the weekend.<\/p>\n

Holding down the number two spot, Disney Pixar\u2019s \u201cHoppers\u201d is expected to remain strong in its third weekend in theaters. Boxoffice Pro projects the animated film will bring in between $15 million and $20 million as families continue showing up.<\/p>\n

Coming in at number three is Universal\u2019s \u201cReminders of Him\u201d in its second weekend. The film is projected to earn between $10 million and $15 million.<\/p>\n

Jack\u2019s Review: Project Hail Mary<\/h2>\n

This film completely caught me off guard.<\/p>\n

I went in totally blind. I didn\u2019t read the book it\u2019s based on, didn\u2019t watch the trailers, and didn\u2019t know much about it, but this movie pulls you in fast. Ryan Gosling plays a scientist who wakes up alone in space and quickly realizes he might be humanity\u2019s last hope.<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t expect was that this story isn\u2019t just about saving Earth.<\/p>\n

Along the way, he meets an alien he names Rocky, because he literally looks like a rock. The two of them are on the same mission, just for different worlds, and that unlikely friendship becomes the heart of the movie.<\/p>\n

Visually, this film is gorgeous. A lot of it feels practical, like real sets and environments, and it really makes you feel like you\u2019re right there with him in space.<\/p>\n

This might be my favorite performance from Gosling. He carries a lot of this movie on his own, and he does it really well.<\/p>\n

I also loved that this isn\u2019t a sequel or a franchise film. It\u2019s just a really original and creative story, and movies like that are becoming harder to find.<\/p>\n

Overall, it\u2019s a really fun and intriguing ride. I\u2019m giving \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d a 9 out of 10.<\/strong><\/p>\n
