He just wanted to be a songwriter. He changed his mind about that, which is a good thing,\u201d Rush, 85, tells me in our recent phone interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Portsmouth, N.H. native\u2019s covers of Browne songs \u2014 notably, \u201cThese Days\u201d \u2014 helped introduce Browne to the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"These Days\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HOBoLACoD-g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Harvard alum is also credited with discovering James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Those two were inducted into Boston\u2019s Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And on March 24, Rush and Browne will join them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rush and Browne are among the five living artists <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.folkamericanarootshalloffame.org\/events\/detail\/induction2026\">inducted<\/a> into FARHOF this year, along with <strong>Neil Young, Judy Collins and Tom Paxton. <\/strong>(\u201cWho is this Neil Young guy?\u201d deadpanned Rush.)<\/p>\n<p>Rush is the only 2026 inductee from New England. For the record: it seems all beat Bob Dylan into the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.folkamericanarootshalloffame.org\/honorees\/alphabetical\">Hall of Fame<\/a>. (Maybe the honorary <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2025\/11\/05\/bob-dylan-accepts-honorary-doctorate-from-boston-berklee-college-of-music\/\">Berklee Doctor<\/a> will make it next time around. Good luck, Zimmy.)<\/p>\n<p>The living legends will be inducted along with \u201clegacy\u201d inductees: late greats <strong>Aretha Franklin, Leonard Cohen, Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters <\/strong>and <strong>Sister Rosetta Tharpe<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are also two \u201cIndustry\/Non-performer\u201d inductees: late folklorist and ethnomusicologist <strong>Alan Lomax, <\/strong>and the late producer\/talent scout <strong>John Hammond,<\/strong> who helped launch Bob Dylan, Franklin, Bruce Springsteen and others.<\/p>\n<p>Young and Browne will not be present at the sold-out celebration Wednesday. But Collins, Paxton and Rush will all perform \u2014 along with special performances by Rockport\u2019s Paul Cole, Grammy winner Dom Flemons, and others. Presenters include Beth Nielsen Chapman, Vance Gilbert, John Oates of Hall &amp; Oates, Noel Paul Stookey of Peter Paul &amp; Mary, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you miss the concert, you can still explore the exhibit <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.folkamericanarootshalloffame.org\/events\/detail\/legends\">\u201c<strong>Legends of Folk, Americana Roots Music, 2025 Class\u201d at FARHOF<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>housed in the Wang Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Let me guide you through the confusion here: FARHOF refers to this year\u2019s lot as both \u201c2026 inductees\u201d and \u201cthe Class of 2025\u201d on their <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.folkamericanarootshalloffame.org\/honorees\/year\">website<\/a>. The names were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/culture\/entertainment\/2025\/11\/12\/neil-young-jackson-browne-judy-collins-boston-folk-americana-roots-hall-of-fame-2026\/\">announced <\/a>in 2025. Jokes and stories are his bread and butter. He\u2019s got a core base of diehard New England fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I called, Rush was on the road to perform in Maryland. Still touring at age 85 with no end in sight, we talked Joni Mitchell, riding a train with the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, Clint Eastwood, pot brownies, a lesson from Leonard Cohen, and more.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-red-pattern\"\/>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boston-com-so-how-does-it-feel-to-be-inducted\"><em>Boston.com: <\/em><strong>So how does it feel to be inducted?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong><em>Tom Rush:<\/em><\/strong> I thought they said indicted.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-you-re-also-going-to-perform-at-the-ceremony\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>You\u2019re also going to perform at the ceremony.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019ll do a song of my own, and a song of Jackson Browne\u2019s, since he won\u2019t be there. And I\u2019ll be singing, \u201cWhere Have All the Flowers Gone\u201d with Judy.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll also have a young kid with me, [former Berklee student] <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/brendanclearymusic.com\/home\">Brendan Cleary<\/a>. He\u2019s 31. I ran into Brendan about a year ago when I was staying at the Hilton near Boston\u2019s Wang Center. This kid was playing guitar in the lobby bar. I thought: \u201cHe\u2019s too good to be playing bars.\u201d I asked the desk in the morning \u201cWho was that guy?\u201d They gave me his number. And he\u2019s just joined me on tour as my new accompanist. I\u2019m trying to get him on stages instead of in bars. He\u2019ll also accompany me at the induction ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wow-you-ve-clearly-got-a-knack-for-discovering-talent-jackson-browne-is-also-being-inducted-you-re-credited-with-discovering-him-joni-mitchell-and-james-taylor-how-did-you-discover-james\"><strong>Wow. You\u2019ve clearly got a knack for discovering talent. Jackson Browne is also being inducted. You\u2019re credited with discovering him, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor. How did you discover James?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>My producer at Elektra, Paul Rothschild, said, \u201cYou gotta hear this kid.\u201d They brought him into the Elektra offices in New York. They put us in an empty room with no furniture. We sat on the floor with a tape recorder. He sang a bunch of songs into the tape recorder and then left for England. [<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2023\/08\/24\/arts\/75-james-taylors-life-is-sweet-baby\/\">Taylor<\/a> was the first artist signed to The Beatles\u2019 Apple Records.]\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-covered-his-something-in-the-way-she-moves-and-sunshine-sunshine-on-your-1968-album-the-circle-game-nbsp\"><strong>You covered his \u201cSomething in the Way She Moves\u201d and \u201cSunshine, Sunshine\u201d on your 1968 album, \u201cThe Circle Game.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Named, of course, after Joni\u2019s song.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-how-did-you-discover-joni-she-s-an-honorary-berklee-college-doctor-now\"><strong>And how did you discover Joni? She\u2019s an honorary <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/08\/31\/arts\/just-call-her-dr-joni-mitchell\/\"><strong>Berklee College doctor<\/strong><\/a><strong> now.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Joni came to a show I was doing in Detroit in a place called The Chess Mate in, I think, \u201966. She\u2019d just started writing songs, and she\u2019d been in a folk duo with her then-husband, Chuck. She\u2019d asked the owner if she could do a four-song guest-set so I could hear her songs and maybe record them. The fourth song was \u201cUrge for Going.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wow-nbsp\"><strong>Wow<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/h4>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joni Mitchell - Urge For Going\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZvSvTRhAJxg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It knocked my socks off. I asked her if she had any more songs, and she basically said \u201cNo, but give me a minute.\u201d A few weeks later, she sent me a tape. Just before the last song, she apologized: \u201cI just finished writing this. It\u2019s not much good. I\u2019m so embarrassed. I ended up at Harvard, as an English major.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-you-discovered-a-passion-for-folk-music\"><strong>Where you discovered a passion for folk music.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There was all this folk music going on in Cambridge at the time. Kids playing Delta Blues, Irish and Scottish ballads. But it did occur to me it was a bit odd hearing Harvard students singing about how rough it was working in the coal mines.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-right\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>Right.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>But we had fun with it. Club 47 [now Passim] was one block from my dorm. I almost flunked out because of Club 47. In fact I came so close to flunking out, I decided to take a year off to see if I could make a living at this folk music thing. I had to go to local hootnannies to recruit guests to sing. I discovered you could get in for free if you had a guitar with you. Then I discovered you could get in for free if you had a guitar <em>case <\/em>with you. I\u2019d put a six-pack in the case and head off to the hoots.<\/p>\n<p>I got caught one night at the Golden Vanity in Boston. The boss said, \u201cHey, kid, you got in for nothing. Get on stage.\u201d I borrowed a guitar, and it went over well enough that he started bringing me back anytime somebody canceled. I was a substitute folk singer. Soon I started getting $10 a night. This is back when $10 was probably worth $12.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-the-good-old-days-you-graduated-in-63-and-have-been-playing-ever-since-looking-back-what-are-some-career-highlights\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>The good old days. You graduated in \u201963, and have been playing ever since. Looking back, what are some career highlights?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Oh, boy, that\u2019s a tough one. Meeting Joni and Jackson and James were all milestones, although I didn\u2019t really realize it at the time. I don\u2019t know. It\u2019s just been a lot of fun. This is my 67th annual farewell tour. I\u2019m looking forward to the next 67.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-was-going-to-say-i-talked-to-you-more-than-five-years-ago-for-your-farewell-tour\"><strong>I was going to say, I talked to you more than five years ago for your farewell tour.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Someday I\u2019ll do a \u201cThis Time I Really Mean It Farewell Tour: Year 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-you-once-told-me-a-great-story-about-riding-the-festival-express-a-train-going-through-canada-in-1970-with-the-grateful-dead-the-band-janis-joplin-the-flying-burrito-brothers-the-trip-was-made-into-a-documentary-in-2003\"><strong><em>[laughs] <\/em>You once told me a great story about riding the Festival Express, a train going through Canada in 1970, with the Grateful Dead, The Band, Janis Joplin, the Flying Burrito Brothers. The trip was made into a <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0372279\/\"><strong>documentary<\/strong><\/a><strong> in 2003.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It was a funny deal. The heir to a furniture store fortune in Canada decided he wanted to do a coast-to-coast music tour with a bunch of famous acts playing stadiums. The tour started in Toronto and ended in Calgary. We drank the train dry two hours out of Toronto. We made them stop at this little whistle-stop town, went to the local booze store and bought <em>everything. <\/em>Every bottle.<\/p>\n<p>They hired this train that usually took families on vacation. The crew didn\u2019t know what to make of all these long-haired weirdos smoking strange things in all hours of the night.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-i-bet\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em> I bet.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Everybody agreed this was a great party. At one point there was discussion that we should just hire the train, party until we ran out of money, play a stadium or two to replenish the bank account, then go back to partying. A fan sent me a box of brownies with a note that said: \u201cOne is loaded.\u201d I thought, \u201cHow do you load just <em>one <\/em>brownie? I had to get there. I got halfway across the park next to the building, and I couldn\u2019t remember where I was going or why.\u00a0 Then I figured it out, and started off again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I went down this side street. It was all lit up. There were sawhorses in front of this apartment building. I\u2019m standing there wondering what\u2019s going on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly this woman runs screaming out of the apartment building, with Clint Eastwood chasing her. Then some random guy in the crowd vaults over a sawhorse and cold-clocked Clint Eastwood. Knocked him out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laughs-amazing-so-the-guy-didn-t-know-they-were-filming-a-movie\"><strong><em>[laughs]<\/em> Amazing. So the guy didn\u2019t know they were filming a movie.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>And I\u2019m stoned out of my tree trying to figure out what\u2019s happening. <em>[laughs]<\/em> I finally made it to the club to play guitar, but at this point it had a rubber neck. It kept bending all over the place.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-classic-i-know-you-ve-got-connections-to-the-living-inductees-do-you-have-any-connections-to-any-of-the-legacy-inductees\"><strong>A classic. We were sitting in a bar in New York City, chatting, and I asked what he was writing about these days. He said, \u201cI\u2019ve run out of things to write about. I\u2019m going to take a couple years off and live\u201d \u2014 to basically accumulate more material. I thought, \u201cWell, that\u2019s an interesting idea.
