He also didn\u2019t know that Kuti ran for president of Nigeria in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is such a wild story; it\u2019s almost mythical,\u201d the Toronto-based artist told CBC Arts. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t know the story, and I lived five minutes away from his house, what else didn\u2019t I know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.felagraphicnovel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>FELA: Music is the Weapon<\/em><\/u><\/a> is a biographical graphic novel, created by Fagbamiye and comic writer Conor McCreery. They exist around the world. But it also became a very heavy reminder of what&#8217;s going on right now in the world. About how important it is for us to protect our rights and to protect our neighbors\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Magical realism\u2019 and music<\/h2>\n<p>The book is described as a reimagining of Kuti&#8217;s life through \u201cmagical realism, Afro-futurist symbolism, and political storytelling \u2014 positioning art itself as an act of resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s impossible to tell Fela\u2019s story without talking about spiritualism and magic and fantasy.
