\nOver the past twelve years, she has operated discreetly in the
\nbackground of one of the world\u2019s most scrutinised households,
\nshepherding royal children through their earliest years with calm
\nauthority and near-total anonymity.<\/p>\n
One of the few times she was seen in an almost public role was
\nat the christening of Princess Charlotte. When the now third in
\nline to the throne was baptised, in July 2015, Maria was on hand to
\nsupport the young family as Kate settled her baby in the vintage
\npram outside the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham
\nestate. Maria Borrallo also looked after Prince George, then two,
\nas the family got ready to make the walk back to the main house at
\nSandringham to celebrate Charlotte\u2019s christening.<\/p>\n
Trained at the prestigious Norland College in Bath \u2013 the elite
\ninstitution whose graduates are famed for their blend of
\ntraditional discipline and modern childcare expertise \u2013 Maria
\nBorrallo was recruited on the recommendation of palace staff and
\nquickly became indispensable. Her famous appearance at Charlotte\u2019s
\nchristening saw her wear the distinctive uniform of the Norland
\nnanny \u2013 brown dress, bowler hat, white gloves and sensible lace-up
\nshoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She has also been an indispensable presence on the royal tours
\nWilliam and Kate have carried out overseas with their children. And
\nif the Prince and Princess of Wales do end up heading to the US
\nthis summer, it may well be that Maria Borrallo accompanies them if
\nthe do decide to take George, 12, Charlotte, 10 and 7 year old
\nLouis with them.<\/p>\n
However, while this is very formal recognition of Maria
\nBorrallo\u2019s place in the household of future king and queen, William
\nand Kate, a far more personal nod was given soon after her
\nappointment as nanny to the family. When Princess Charlotte was
\nborn, on May 2 2015, she left hospital a few hours later wearing a
\ncream bonnet, a gift that Maria Borrallo had found from a Spanish
\nfamily firm. The gesture, modest and personal, spoke to the close
\nrelationship she had already formed with the family.<\/p>\n
Today, that is recognised at an investiture at Windsor Castle
\nwhere she will receive a very special honour, ordered by King
\nCharles himself.<\/p>\n
