Superman<\/em> actress Valerie Perrine<\/strong> has died<\/a> following a battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a>. She was 82.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away,\u201d Perrine\u2019s friend Stacey Souther<\/strong> announced in a Monday, March 23, Facebook statement<\/a> shared on both women\u2019s pages.<\/p>\n

Souther explained that the late actress<\/a> \u2014 best known for playing Lex Luthor\u2019s secretary, Eve Teschmacher, in 1978\u2019s Superman<\/em> and 1980\u2019s Superman II<\/em> \u2014 \u201cfaced Parkinson\u2019s disease with incredible courage and compassion, never once complaining.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest \u2014 and what a magnificent life it was. The world feels less beautiful without her in it,\u201d the statement concluded. \u201cI love you, Valerie. I\u2019ll see you on the other side. \u2764\ufe0f.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perrine began her career as a Las Vegas showgirl before making her way in Hollywood in the 1970s.<\/p>\n

Prior to her role in the Superman<\/em> franchise, Perrine played Lenny Bruce\u2019s (Dustin Hoffman<\/strong><\/a>) drug-addicted stripper wife, Honey, in 1974\u2019s Lenny<\/em>. The part earned Perrine her only Oscar nomination. Her last role came in 2016 in Silver Skies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Throughout her career, Perrine\u2019s love life also made headlines. After the accidental death of fianc\u00e9 Bill Haarman<\/strong>, an importer and gun collector, one month before their wedding in January 1969, Perrine briefly romanced hairdresser Jay Sebring<\/strong>. Sebring was murdered by Charles Manson<\/strong>\u2019s followers<\/a> along with five others while staying at Sharon Tate<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s home in August 1969. (Perrine was invited to the house but had to work.)<\/p>\n

While Perrine cheated death on more than one occasion \u2014 she also survived a plane crash at 32 \u2014 she privately battled Parkinson\u2019s for more than a decade before her passing.<\/p>\n

According to a GoFundMe<\/a> started by Souther, Perrine began showing \u201csigns of essential tremors\u201d in 2011 four years before she was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s. The disease has also plagued her family, with Valerie\u2019s brother, Ken Perrine<\/strong>, suffering from the same illness.<\/p>\n
