Are you interested?\u2019 The offer didn\u2019t even make sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor Eichenberger and the rest of the current Beach Boys touring band, led by founding member Mike Love, the offer made a lot of sense. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chriscronmusic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cron\u2019s Instagra<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chriscronmusic\/\">m<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chriscronmusic\/\" target=\"_blank\"> feed<\/a> is packed with viral videos where he re-creates vintage Beach Boys harmonies with stunning precision, mimicking the unique vocal styles of every single member. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/pet-sounds\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pet-sounds\" data-tag=\"pet-sounds\">Pet Sounds<\/a> Live brings that same commitment to historical perfection to concert stages across the country, and Cron proved himself to be an asset to the current Beach Boys lineup late last year when he briefly subbed for Christian Love on vocals and guitar.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut he never expected to be anything more than a brief fill-in, let alone the full-time replacement for a classic-era member who sang on \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d and <em>Pet Sounds<\/em>. \u201cPeople say, \u2018You\u2019re in the Beach Boys!\u2019 says Cron. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m a touring member of the current thing right now, so I guess so.\u2019\u00a0 But it\u2019s just weird to be like \u2026 I don\u2019t know what to think. It\u2019s just fun. This was never on my bingo card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe road to this moment started four decades back in Orange County, California, where Cron grew up in a household that revered the Beatles, Elton John, and Steely Dan. \u201cWhen Windows 95 came out, it came with a grainy music video for Weezer\u2019s \u2018Buddy Holly,&#8217;\u201d he says. \u201cAnd The Blue Album came out when I was 12. It\u2019s the first album I remember loving that was completely my own. Then I had a youth pastor who turned me on to British second-wave ska. They toured a lot, including two summers on the Vans Warped Tour, and cut three records, initially in the mold of Something Corporate, and then eventually \u201cElton John meets Keane,\u201d in the words of Cron. But he never found a real footing in the industry, which was slowly dying while they were together. The band\u2019s final record wasn\u2019t even released in America. \u201cWe took it back and tried to shop it around to other labels, and no one was biting,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I was just tired and burnt out. I told the guys that I was done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCron was a few months short of his 30th birthday, still living with his parents, and deeply uncertain about what his future held without the band. He found work at Cold Stone Creamery, and a grocery store, got married, and eventually decided to move to Nashville and start over. His wife worked an office job while he oversaw an after-school program at the Nashville YMCA, and took odd construction jobs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((683\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Casey Pierce<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt one point, he found himself face-to-face with Paramore\u2019s Hayley Williams while doing work on her kitchen. Years earlier, M\u00eal\u00e9e went on a tour where Paramore served as their support act. \u201cI\u2019m now in her kitchen working on plumbing and stuff,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I said to her, \u2018I don\u2019t know if you remember this, but your band opened up for us.\u2019 She did remember, and she was super sweet and nice. We talked about the good old days of the Warped Tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCron and his wife had a baby boy, and continuing with a full-time music career felt less important to him than earning a steady income for his family. But he still gave piano lessons on the side, and eventually found gig work with the Israeli software company Simply. Their apps Simply Sing and Simply Guitar help teach young musicians using AI feedback. \u201cInstead of getting the licenses for all these classic songs, which would cost a fortune, they just opted to rerecord everything,\u201d says Cron. \u201cSo they hired me to sing a bunch of classic-rock tunes. Our producer was like, \u2018You have to just go immerse yourself in that.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe was stunned by what he heard. \u201cThey went way beyond the scope of just two guitars, bass, and drums, and maybe a piano,\u201d Cron says. \u201cTo have clarinet and flute and glockenspiel and all these things in a pop-rock production \u2026 It was just magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTwo decades later, after singing \u201cWouldn\u2019t It Be Nice\u201d for the Simply Sing app, an idea came to him. \u201cI had no followers and I wasn\u2019t trying to become an influencer or whatever,\u201d Cron says. \u201cI just was throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck. I was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ve got all these tracks for \u2018Wouldn\u2019t It Be Nice.\u2019 Maybe I throw up a stupid video about how to sound like the Beach Boys.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe posted it April 13, 2023. \u201cI checked a couple hours later and it was like 10,000 views, which was the most I\u2019d ever had,\u2019 Cron says. \u201cWhen I came back it was like 40,000 views.\u00a0 And so I called my wife, and was jokingly like, \u2018I got a viral video.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe video eventually racked up nearly 2 million views, and he followed it up with many Beach Boys-related videos. One fan tagged John Stamos in the comments, and he followed Cron. \u201cI wrote him a message like, \u2018Hey, thanks for the follow,&#8217;\u201d says Cron. \u201cAnd he wrote me back and we just kind of kept talking back and forth. And then he introduced me to Brian Eichenberger, who lives like 20 minutes away. We got coffee and hit it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe video also grabbed the attention of Jeff Celentano, an occasional member of Al Jardine\u2019s backing group, who also leads the Beach Boys tribute band Good Vibrations. He invited Cron to join him and his collaborator Jason Brewer in their new touring project Pet Sounds Live. Their goal was to play a note-perfect rendition of <em>Pet Sounds<\/em> along with classic Beach Boys hits on the tribute-band circuit.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pet Sounds Live! \u2014 \u201cWouldn\u2019t It Be Nice\u201d (Live at Sierra Rep Theatre, 2025)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mZNUuRbekCc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI met them through Instagram,\u201d says Cron. \u201cThey were like, \u2018We need a bass player.\u2019 I bought a bass and learned how to play. I played bass on demos before, but that was simple punk-rock things. Learning all the Carol Kaye parts took me a month or so, and the first few shows were a little rocky for me. I eventually got it down and just memorized everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut the dates were sporadic, and Cron continued to take random vocal-session jobs, including Japanese commercials, and parts for Swedish house DJs. Now, Cron and his wife had two kids to support, and the irregular work meant that some months they\u2019d be $3,000 short. Then the next month he\u2019d make enough for two months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe stayed in touch with Eichenberger, who had young kids the same age as his own, and the families grew close. In the spring of 2024, Eichenberger invited Cron and his family to a Beach Boys show in Kentucky. Cron was welcomed onto the stage to sing on \u201cKokomo,\u201d and his kids were waved on to dance to \u201cBarbara Ann,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/flashback-the-full-house-gang-jams-with-the-beach-boys-100219\/\">much like the fictional Tanner clan did on <em>Full House<\/em> back in 1988. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tStamos, who performs at occasional Beach Boys shows, as he\u2019s done since 1985, remained in touch with Cron as well. \u201cHe loves to connect and help people,\u201d says Cron. \u201cEarly on when I was talking to him, he\u2019s like, \u2018Did you get an invite to my birthday party?\u2019 I was like, \u2018What are you talking about?\u2019 And my wife and I went to his birthday party out in California. There was several more dudes there, like drummers, that he met online, too. Bruce was there, and he was so welcoming. He gave my son advice like, \u2018You should go to college.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJohnston joined the Beach Boys 61 years ago when Brian Wilson\u2019s original road replacement, Glen Campbell, stepped aside after just a few months. With the exception of the period between 1972 and 1978, he remained in the group until the end of 2025. When he decided to retire, the baton was passed to Cron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cYou can\u2019t replace <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bruce-johnston\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bruce-johnston\" data-tag=\"bruce-johnston\">Bruce Johnston<\/a>,\u201d says Cron. \u201cI can\u2019t even say I\u2019m filling his shoes because that doesn\u2019t feel right. Tim Bonhomme handles the heavy lifting on the keyboard parts, and he helped Cron figure out where to chime in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m basically doing auxiliary parts on piano and organ,\u201d says Cron. \u201cOn \u2018Darlin,\u2019 I play the low piano bass thing that doubles the bass guitar, and then tambourine. And then I sing all of Bruce\u2019s parts. So I had to learn Christian\u2019s parts last year, and then totally relearn the whole show on Bruce\u2019s parts. You can\u2019t say no to this opportunity.\u2019 I haven\u2019t toured since I was in my old band back in 2010. I was newly married then, and didn\u2019t have kids. And now I\u2019m fully married [<em>laughs<\/em>], and have kids. It\u2019s a big jump, but they\u2019re really excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAmazingly, none of this would have happened without Instagram. \u201cIt\u2019s just weird,\u201d he says. \u201cFor all of the woes of social media, which there are many, this is one of the silver linings of it. Also, none of this could have been planned.
