The campus performance fell on the same day that she released the dreamy R&amp;B single \u201cLove Me Not\u201d as the introduction to her second studio album, <em>Bird\u2019s Eye<\/em>. \u201cObviously nobody knew the song,\u201d Lenae, 27, recalls. \u201cAnd as soon as the drums came in, I saw the crowd completely shift.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/p\/future-of-music-2026\/\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen she thinks of it now, the performance calls to mind an ancient relic that surfaced a few months later: a video of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vNC1W2m4Uug\">MGMT<\/a> playing an early version of \u201cKids\u201d to a small but mighty crowd at Wesleyan University in 2003, two years before its official release. \u201cThat\u2019s one of my favorite videos ever,\u201d Lenae says. \u201cSeeing a crowd have a physical reaction to something without being told to is such a human and raw experience that we don\u2019t really get to have anymore.\u201d As she watched the audience react to her set, she thought to herself, \u201cThere\u2019s something really special about \u2018Love Me Not.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLenae\u2019s instincts were right. In April 2025, nearly a full year after that college show, \u201cLove Me Not\u201d broke through at Number 81 on the<em> Billboard<\/em> Hot 100, and by last summer, it had jumped all the way to\u00a0 Number Five. (It\u2019s also been used in millions of posts on TikTok.) \u201cWhen we finished that song, I knew it was a big song \u2014 there\u2019s something about it that strikes every chord, at least for me,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was just a matter of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn fact, her breakthrough wasn\u2019t mere months in the making, but years. Lenae signed to Atlantic Records in 2016 as a bright-eyed 17-year-old following the independent release of her debut EP, <em>Moon Shoes<\/em>. It\u2019s made me the woman I\u2019m growing into, and I can be proud of that and keep going.\u201d She really just wants to make music that means something to her. \u201cI know that there is a purpose for all of this,\u201d Lenae says. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing that keeps me going. I feel like there\u2019s like this rope attached to me, and I\u2019m just pulling it. The clarity of her perspective is evident as she speaks, balancing hard-earned wisdom and eager curiosity. Her self-assurance has kept her armored against the backlash and backhanded compliments that have surfaced in some online discourse surrounding her music. \u201cThere was some stupid tweet that said, \u2018She gives token Black girl, or Black girl in the white friend group,\u2019\u201d Lenae says. It was one thing when people assumed \u201cLove Me Not\u201d was performed by a white artist, which she chewed over privately with her family, friends, and team. But this was something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI felt like that was the perfect opportunity to really address what this type of mindset is and where it comes from,\u201d she says. \u201cNot so much to defend myself \u2014 I know who I am.\u201d She just wanted to understand why she was being picked apart. In a TikTok post, Lenae addressed the comments, noting that her creative aesthetic is directly inspired by the likes of Chaka Khan, Minnie Riperton, and Diana Ross. \u201cIt\u2019s really a disservice to Black women to think that we have to be one way or the other,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s a really boring take and it also diminishes our history and what we come from.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLike clockwork, Olivia Dean \u2014 another Black woman making music outside the parameters of what might be expected of her \u2014 was subjected to the same tired discourse just weeks after Lenae. \u201cI didn\u2019t like seeing that about Olivia,\u201d Lenae says. \u201cShe knows who she is, so I\u2019m not worried about her. But I think it\u2019s a thing that we gotta keep talking about and keep challenging.\u201d In the meantime, Lenae is surrounding herself with joy. She\u2019s been spotted passionately soaking in performances from Jazmine Sullivan and Doechii with the fervor of a real music fan. She\u2019s also appeared on projects from PinkPantheress, Charlie Puth, Kali Uchis, and more in recent months. Her circle of collaborators has also included Kaytranda, Childish Gambino, and Steve Lacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOver the years, Lenae has won the devotion of an audience that hears the future in her music.
