{"id":2345440,"date":"2026-03-25T20:07:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T20:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2345440"},"modified":"2026-03-25T20:07:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T20:07:18","slug":"sublime-new-album-interview-until-the-sun-explodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/sublime-new-album-interview-until-the-sun-explodes\/","title":{"rendered":"Sublime New Album Interview: Until the Sun Explodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor the first time since 1996, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sublime\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sublime\" data-tag=\"sublime\">Sublime<\/a> will release a brand-new album, <em>Until the Sun Explodes<\/em>, June 12, with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jakob-nowell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jakob-nowell\" data-tag=\"jakob-nowell\">Jakob Nowell<\/a> \u2014 the late <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bradley-nowell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bradley-nowell\" data-tag=\"bradley-nowell\">Bradley Nowell<\/a>\u2018s son \u2014 on vocals alongside original members <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/eric-wilson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_eric-wilson\" data-tag=\"eric-wilson\">Eric Wilson<\/a> on bass and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bud-gaugh\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bud-gaugh\" data-tag=\"bud-gaugh\">Bud Gaugh<\/a> on drums. Jakob, who originally imagined a more limited involvement with the band when he first signed on in 2023, tells <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>that he kept finding himself deeper and deeper in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s kind of like being a drug addict,\u201d says Jakob, who got sober in 2017. \u201cYou\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, I drink, but I don\u2019t do coke.\u2019 And it\u2019s like, \u2018OK, I do blow, but I would never do blank.\u2019 And then you just keep going. I was like, \u2018Well, I\u2019ll sing one of the songs, but I\u2019ll never join the band. OK, I\u2019ll join the band, but I\u2019m not going to step on people\u2019s toes and write a new record.&#8217;\u201d He laughs. \u201cAnd so I\u2019m like, God, where am I? What am I doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sublime - Until The Sun Explodes (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9WhguJtzWuI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven though the band\u2019s upcoming LP is being released under the name Sublime \u2014 and uncannily channels an awful lot of the band\u2019s sonic essence \u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 Nowell doesn\u2019t quite consider it the real thing. \u201cThe last <em>true <\/em>Sublime record will be [1996\u2019s] self-titled, hands down, period,\u201d says Nowell, who also records his own music under the name Jakobs Castle. \u201cYou can\u2019t compete with mythology. This is the epilogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe album pulls in guests including H.R. from Bad Brains, Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge, and G Love, plus FIDLAR and Australian surf-rockers Skegss. The title track and lead single is out today, alongside a video filmed at spots around Long Beach that carry weight in the Sublime story, with pro skaters Christian Hosoi and Omar Hassan making appearances. The album\u2019s opening track, \u201cEnsenada,\u201d already dominated Billboard\u2019s Alternative Airplay chart for two months straight last year, holding the Number One spot longer than any other song on that chart in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGaugh, who only briefly played with Wilson in his now-defunct collaboration with Rome Ramirez, Sublime With Rome, says the album validated something he felt from the first rehearsal with Jakob. \u201cFrom day one, it seemed way more natural than anything we had done previously,\u201d he says. \u201cThe chemistry and the sound \u2014 it was all there. It really brought me back to the mid-Nineties with Brad.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe totally reminds me of a sober version of Brad,\u201d adds Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGaugh describes Jakob\u2019s songs as a direct continuation of Bradley\u2019s habit of writing about his daily life (including immortalizing his pet, Louie Dog) and events around him, including the L.A. riots.\u00a0 \u201cJake took that same recipe and started writing about things that were happening in his life, in our lives, right now,\u201d Gaugh says. \u201cThat really impressed me \u2014 the way he caught onto that and followed that prescription.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen it came time to write, Jakob, touring guitarist Zeno, and producer John Joseph built a comprehensive research document cataloguing every chord progression, lyrical theme, sonic texture, and stylistic boundary in the Sublime discography. They went as far as making Venn diagrams and spreadsheets, while debating what was and was not \u201ccanonical\u201d to the band\u2019s sound. \u201cIt sounds a little contrived,\u201d Nowell admits, \u201cbut we didn\u2019t do it out of a sense of, \u2018Oh God, we need to do this or else.\u2019 We were having a blast, dude.\u201d The key, he says, was a two-phase approach: \u201cWe had to learn the book, and then burn the book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor all the geekiness, Nowell says the actual secret was chasing the \u201ctrue process of Sublime \u2014 that fun, wild craziness in the moment, that sort of altered state of consciousness that you get from making music with your friends and staying up all goddamn night.\u201d On the track \u201cEvil Men,\u201d he took that approach to an extreme, staying awake for days trying to reach a trance-like creative state before free-styling the song. \u201cI don\u2019t get high no more,\u201d he says, \u201cso I was like, fuck, I need to get into some kind of altered state to commune with the gods.\u201d .<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJakob thought about his father constantly throughout the making of the album \u201cIt\u2019s all for him,\u201d he says. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be here doing this if not for him. And I\u2019d prefer it would be him doing it.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf Bradley were here, we would have probably been writing material as Sublime and then had Jake come and guest on a few songs,\u201d says Gaugh. \u201cI am certain of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe album arrives a month before the 30th anniversary of <em>Sublime<\/em>, and the band plan to play the whole album start to finish at their two Red Rocks shows in April. Wilson wants to keep going and sees no reason to stop, and Gaugh is open to continuing. Nowell is reluctant. \u201cI think it will be the only full record I make with Sublime,\u201d he says. \u201cMaybe in another 30 years we\u2019ll make another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNowell has already started thinking about his next Jakobs Castle album, and he plans to scale back Sublime shows after this year. But he says this album solved a lot of issues for him \u201cHow do I feel about this death or being related to this mythological figure or living in a shadow \u2014\u00a0all of that just melted away into the studio, man.
