You might expect a screenwriter working in the horror genre to be relatively difficult to scare, but Haley Z. Boston, the creator and executive producer of Netflix\u2019s harrowing new limited series \u201cSomething Very Bad Is Going to Happen<\/a>,\u201d insists that is not the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m afraid of everything,\u201d Boston, 31, said during a recent Zoom conversation. \u201cI\u2019m afraid of horror movies, but that\u2019s why I love them so much, because they scare me. A lot of horror people are desensitized and looking for something to shake them. I am the opposite. I am easily afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The easily frightened \u2014 and the recently engaged \u2014 might be advised to approach Boston\u2019s new series, which premiered Thursday, with caution. A haunting fusion of David Lynch surrealism<\/a> and \u201cRosemary\u2019s Baby\u201d paranoia, \u201cSomething Very Bad Is Going to Happen\u201d traces the peculiar and ominous events that unfold in the week leading up to the nuptials between wary Rachel (Camila Morrone) and trusting fianc\u00e9 Nicky (Adam DiMarco), as overseen by Nicky\u2019s mother Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh).<\/p>\n

Faced with inexplicable truths about Nicky\u2019s family and her own past, Rachel becomes convinced that saying \u201cI do\u201d has the potential to prove deadly, and she comes to fear what might take place when she walks down the aisle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d seen people in their wedding, in their vows, say, \u2018I never once had a doubt,\u2019\u201d Boston said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018How could you not constantly question everything?\u2019 It felt very natural to me to explore that idea in a horror show where the doubt is the horror.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horror has long been a preoccupation for Boston. The Oregon native has a tattoo of the phrase \u201cCarrie White burns in hell\u201d to commemorate her favorite film, Brian DePalma\u2019s landmark Stephen King adaptation, \u201cCarrie.\u201d She distinguished herself writing episodes of weird, atmospheric series including Netflix\u2019s \u201cBrand New Cherry Flavor,\u201d a nightmarish exploration of witchcraft and filmmaking in 1990s L.A., and \u201cGuillermo del Toro\u2019s Cabinet of Curiosities<\/a>,\u201d also for Netflix.<\/p>\n

Her installment in the Oscar-winning director\u2019s anthology series, \u201cThe Outside,\u201d was inspired by a comic titled \u201cSome Other Animal\u2019s Meat\u201d and followed the unnerving transformation one woman undergoes after purchasing a beauty cream advertised on a late-night infomercial. \u201cIt\u2019s all about being an outsider and feeling different, and I related to that,\u201d Boston said.<\/p>\n

Boston began writing at the age of 11, and after seeing Quentin Tarantino\u2019s \u201cKill Bill\u201d in her early teens, she became interested in filmmaking. \u201cI was so taken by the way that the story is told, and I love a revenge story,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I started to think, \u2018Is this something? Who wrote that? How does any of this work?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She had considered following her parents\u2019 path and choosing a career in medicine, but during her first formal writing class at Northwestern University, she felt that she\u2019d found her calling. \u201cI was like, \u2018No, this is it. This is what I want to do,\u2019\u201d Boston said.<\/p>\n

After graduation, she moved to L.A., taking a job in the William Morris Endeavor mailroom and writing scripts on her own time. A high school slasher movie she\u2019d penned in college landed her an agent. Soon after, her pilot for a \u201csapphic murder story\u201d inspired by \u201cKilling Eve\u201d netted her 22 pitch meetings \u2014 the first was with director Sam Raimi, whose early-career \u201cEvil Dead\u201d movies are beloved cult classics. \u201cI was 24, and I did the scariest thing at the time possible,\u201d Boston said. \u201cSometimes I think if you don\u2019t think too much about how terrifying it is, and you\u2019re just thrown into it, that\u2019s better.\u201d<\/p>\n

With \u201cSomething Very Bad Is Going to Happen,\u201d Boston found herself thrown into the position of showrunner without ever having spent any real time on a set. Yet Morrone says Boston was the picture of confident professionalism throughout the shoot. \u201cThere\u2019s just a grace to her,\u201d Morrone said. \u201cEven if she was overwhelmed, you would just never see it. These are her words and her world, and she inherently knows the character and the story so well that she could really navigate any questions thrown at her because it lives in her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series is something profoundly personal for Boston. Growing up with parents whose marriage seemed idyllic had left her struggling once she began dating, and she channeled many of her own anxieties into the show. \u201cThey\u2019ve been together for 37 years or something,\u201d Boston said of her parents. \u201cI felt all this pressure knowing that that exists. It always felt like a curse. You have this great example of what a marriage is, and I always found myself weighing every little romantic tryst against this 30-year marriage \u2014 which was unhelpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hit upon the premise for the series right around her 27th birthday, a time when more and more of her friends began to get married, and developed the idea while working on other projects. By the time Boston sat down to write the pilot episode, she knew the narrative and the characters so well that it took her just two weeks to finish.<\/p>\n

Pitching the series, she met with \u201cStranger Things\u201d creators Matt and Ross Duffer<\/a>, who were so impressed by her vision that they signed on to executive produce \u201cSomething Very Bad Is Going to Happen\u201d through their Upside Down Pictures banner.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom reading one page of her script, it became very clear that this is someone who has a very unique voice,\u201d Ross said. \u201cIt was unlike anything we\u2019d ever read before. Immediately, we were like, \u2018We have to be involved with this. We have to help bring her vision to life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt added, \u201cHaley has such a specific sense of humor. It\u2019s very dark, very dry, but it also feels incredibly real. Her characters talk very much in the same way that real people talk. I find that sadly rare in the scripts that you read.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series was filmed in Toronto in January 2025 with directors Weronika Tofilska (\u201cBaby Reindeer\u201d), Lisa Br\u00fchlmann (\u201cKilling Eve\u201d) and Axelle Carolyn (\u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d) behind the camera. Boston said she and her collaborators would often reference specific films \u2014 everything from \u201cThe Celebration\u201d to \u201cUncut Gems\u201d \u2014 as a shorthand for the tone they were hoping to strike in a given episode. \u201cI really love a story that takes something normal and grounded and gives one twist on it that throws you into a different world and makes you see things in a different way,\u201d Boston said.<\/p>\n

With \u201cSomething Very Bad Is Going to Happen\u201d poised to elevate Boston\u2019s Hollywood profile, establishing her as one of the most exciting voices in horror, she\u2019s already planning for her future, writing a film that she intends to direct. \u201cI love the horror community, but it is still such a boy\u2019s club, and I really want to infiltrate it,\u201d Boston said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe genre has been so much about women, and in studying feminist theory in horror, especially back in the \u201970s, the genre forced men to relate to women \u2014 you\u2019re watching a woman survive, which is ultimately very powerful,\u201d she added. \u201cI find it interesting how many men are making horror movies about women. I talked about \u2018Carrie.\u2019 I love that movie, but it\u2019s missing something. Same with \u2018Rosemary\u2019s Baby.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThis show is such a great opportunity to begin my career in this genre \u2014 now, I want to continue my reign of terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
