Lionel Richie<\/a> just slammed celebrities for getting fed up with fans when they get famous, amid Chappell Roan<\/a> facing backlash for her treatment of fans.<\/p>\n On the March 25 episode of Joel Madden<\/a>\u2018s Artist Friendly<\/a> podcast, the Good Charlotte<\/a> frontman, 47, interviewed his father-in-law, 76. (Madden is married to Richie\u2019s daughter, Nicole Richie<\/a>, 44.)<\/p>\n During their sit-down, the \u201cAll Night Long\u201d singer offered his advice \u2014 with more than 40 years in the entertainment industry \u2014 to stars when interacting with fans.<\/p>\n \u201cI tell people when they get into the business: \u2018There\u2019s one thing you didn\u2019t calculate. I hope you like people,’\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n Richie continued, \u201cBecause if you don\u2019t like people, here\u2019s how it\u2019s going to sound. You spend the first half of your career going, \u2018Look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me, look at me.\u2019 And then you finally get famous. \u2018Don\u2019t look at me. Don\u2019t look at me. Don\u2019t look at me.’\u201d<\/p>\n The American Idol<\/a> judge added, \u201cI\u2019m going, \u2018OK, now, the universe gave you what you were asking for. Now, what is it about people you don\u2019t like? Oh, you want to be famous and rich without the people?\u2019 It doesn\u2019t work like that. It doesn\u2019t work like that You have to be able to engage!’\u201d<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the interview<\/a>, Madden praised Richie for always engaging with fans and, at the very least, acknowledging people, even at restaurants. \u201cAs you walk through, you see someone if they look at you. And instead of looking away, you acknowledge them,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting that you do that.\u201d<\/p>\n Richie admitted that his kids would give him a hard time for doing so, pointing out that he was responding, but no one was actually talking to him.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, they didn\u2019t say anything to me. They waved,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey looked at me, and instead of looking at them and turning my head and keep walking, instead of just waving and keeping my mouth closed, I go \u2018Hi, how are you?’\u201d<\/p>\n Although Richie didn\u2019t name any names, his remarks came amid backlash aimed at \u201cPink Pony Club\u201d singer Chappell Roan after a controversial incident involving a security guard that left Jude Law<\/a>\u2018s 11-year-old stepdaughter in tears<\/a>. The \u201cGood Luck, Babe!\u201d songstress has previously clashed with photographers<\/a> and spoken out about fans approaching her in public<\/a>.<\/p>\n
