Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie Have retained their royal
\ntitles even as their father and mother lose the honours they once
\nheld themselves.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, Sarah Ferguson was stripped of the Freedom of
\nthe City of York when councillors voted to remove the distinction
\nfrom her. It follows revelations about her friendship with
\nconvicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n
Sarah Ferguson had been given the honour in 1987, the year after
\nher marriage to the former prince Andrew. Now Andrew
\nMountbatten-Windsor, he was stripped of his Freedom of the City of
\nYork in 2022.<\/p>\n

Both Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson lost their
\ntitles in November last year. Both said they would no longer use
\ntheir honorifics just before King Charles announced he had asked
\nthe Lord Chancellor to remove the titles of Duke of York, Earl of
\nInverness and Baron Killyleagh from the Roll of Peerage. The King
\nalso issued Letters Patent removing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s
\nHRH and title of Prince.<\/p>\n
However, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson\u2019s two
\ndaughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, retained their titles and HRHs
\nalthough The King\u2019s actions are a reminder that this status is far
\nfrom certain.<\/p>\n
Beatrice and Eugenie have been styled as HRH and Princess since
\ntheir births because of their great, great grandfather, King George
\nV.<\/p>\n
George V\u2019s 1917 Letters Patent stated that all the grandchildren
\nof a Monarch in the male line, that is the legitimate children of
\ntheir sons, can be known as HRH and Prince or Princess.<\/p>\n
Beatrice and Eugenie are both grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth
\nII and so are both HRH and Princess. That remains unchanged.
\nHowever, the decision of King Charles to issue Letters Patent
\nremoving the HRH and Prince that had belonged, under the same 1917
\nrules, to Andrew is a reminder that royal status is very much up to
\nthe Monarch.<\/p>\n
If King Charles were to decide that his nieces should no longer
\nbe princesses, he could simply issue fresh Letters Patent that
\nwould remove their titles. The same is true of anyone who holds a
\ntitle under the 1917 Letters Patent of King George V.<\/p>\n

Less easy to change is the line of succession to the throne.
\nAndrew Mountbatten-Windsor remains eighth in line and taking him
\nout of the succession requires an Act of Parliament. It would also
\nneed agreement from all the other realms where Charles III is
\nMonarch.<\/p>\n
However, leading politicians in Canada, Australia and New
\nZealand have all indicated that they would support his removal from
\nthe succession. That scrutiny has intensified since Andrew
\nMountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February by officers
\ninvestigating misconduct in public office. He was released eleven
\nhours later, under investigation.<\/p>\n
His former home at Royal Lodge was searched \u2013 he had moved out
\nof it at the end of January after surrendering the lease on the
\nthirty room mansion which sits in Windsor Great Park and is part of
\nthe Crown Estate. The former prince is moving to a smaller
\nresidence on the Sandringham estate, which is the personal property
\nof King Charles. His new home in Norfolk was also searched by
\nofficers as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were both with the Royal
\nFamily at Christmas. It was seen as a clear indication from both
\nwomen of their decision to support the royals as their parents fell
\ninto further disgrace. However, their longer term status remains
\nuncertain as the House of York continues to falter.<\/p>\n
