Kennedy Center because this beloved citadel has become a symbol of what is happening,\u201d Fonda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Committee of the First Amendment felt it was time to expose the range and depth of the attacks on the bedrock of our democracy, the First Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event, called \u201cArtists United for Our Freedoms,\u201d was organized by the Committee for the First Amendment, a group started by Fonda\u2019s father that she <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/5531307-jane-fonda-relaunches-committee-first-amendement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:revived in October;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">revived in October<\/a> after ABC News temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late-night show amid pressure from the government.<\/p>\n<p>Performers and speakers at the event ranged from Fonda and Baez to actors Sam Waterston and Billy Porter, singer Maggie Rogers, former celebrity.land correspondent Jim Acosta and acclaimed author Ann Patchett.<\/p>\n<p>The event comes as the Kennedy Center has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/5720820-kennedy-center-trump-closure-dc-theater\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:come under increased control;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">come under increased control<\/a> from the Trump administration since the beginning of his term. Trump has overhauled the center\u2019s board and named himself chair, placed his own name on the side of the building and announced the center would be closing for two years to undergo renovations.<\/p>\n<p>The changes have led to a wave of musicians, dancers and singers canceling their performances at the venue and resulted in a significant drop in ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Matt Floca, the center\u2019s executive director, sent an internal email to employees stating they would begin rolling out layoffs ahead of the center\u2019s closure in the days and weeks ahead. DC News Now <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcnewsnow.com\/news\/local-news\/washington-dc\/dozens-lose-jobs-at-kennedy-center-as-renovation-layoffs-commence\/amp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported Thursday at least;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">reported Thursday at least<\/a> 40 staff members are losing their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of you are with us, thank you,\u201d Fonda said of the laid off employees. \u201cThe center has been effectively silenced after artists refused to bow to ideological demands and the racist erasure of history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendees held up signs that said, \u201cPerforming arts are for everyone! Not Trump branding\u201d and \u201cwe are the Kennedy Center.\u201d The small stage displayed signs hand-painted in red, white and blue saying, \u201cFreedom begins with expression\u201d and \u201cArt = Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact that this has had on the organization and my colleagues who work so tirelessly on behalf of local and national people, all of us, to make sure that we\u2019ve been representing arts from every corner of our country, I\u2019m here on behalf of them as well as what we\u2019re all losing,\u201d said Diana Ezerins, a D.C. resident who said she previously worked at the Kennedy Center for 18 years.<\/p>\n<p>The event <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/in-the-know\/5798317-no-kings-protests-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:comes a day before;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">comes a day before<\/a> millions are expected to demonstrate in \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests around the country. A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thirdact.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:member of Third Act;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">member of Third Act<\/a>, a progressive organization for people older than 60, passed out flyers for a march across Memorial Bridge early Saturday to congregate on the National Mall.<\/p>\n<p>Rogers, an Indie pop singer, said she grew up going to the Kennedy Center as a kid and was inspired by the artists she saw perform there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s the role of any administration to tell someone how to feel, especially when shared feeling is so often the thing that connects us,\u201d Rogers said. \u201cMore than anything these days I feel scared, and I feel afraid and when I feel that way I make music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baez, a folk singer popular in the 1950s and \u201960s, said she considered returning her Kennedy Center honor amid changes to the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized that that would be admitting defeat,\u201d Baez said. \u201cIt would mean that we\u2019ve given into a bully and a tyrant who is doing his best to strip us of our freedoms, to strip us of our joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baez and Rogers performed a duet together, singing \u201cain\u2019t gonna let no pagan bigotry turn me around\u201d and \u201cain\u2019t gonna let no censorship turn me around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event closed out with an original song performed by Kristy Lee, a country folk singer who withdrew from performing at the Kennedy Center after Trump\u2019s crackdown. Lee said she was looking forward to the opportunity to play at the esteemed center but it would have cost her her \u201cintegrity,\u201d which she said was \u201cworth more than any paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised with a good gut to know right from wrong and I think there\u2019s a lot of things that are happening right now that we all know just ain\u2019t right,\u201d Lee said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s got a lot of people disconnected from each other. That\u2019s one of the reasons I pulled away from playing at the Kennedy Center.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee performed one of her songs called \u201cFree Love\u201d for the audience and asked the audience to respond with \u201clove is free\u201d each time they heard her say \u201cfree love.\u201d The other speakers and performers joined her on the stage, holding on to each other and swaying to Lee\u2019s song.<\/p>\n<p>The event wrapped up at around 3:30 p.m. EDT, with Fonda encouraging the crowd and those watching on the livestream to attend \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests in their home areas Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><i>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
