Looking to survive a horror<\/a> movie? In 1996, Scream <\/em>outlined three simple rules to follow: “Never have sex, never drink or do drugs, and never, under any circumstances, say, ‘I\u2019ll be right back.'” Why? “Because you won\u2019t <\/em>be back.”<\/p>\n That was twenty years ago. Horror flick victims might not have been able to successfully kill famous ’90s monsters like Ghostface, Michael Myers, or even Freddy Krueger. But at the very least, viewers understood the rules. (Even that wacky Hellraiser <\/em>puzzle box!) Nowadays, across Netflix<\/a> thrillers and A24<\/a> art house horror films, the plots have become so complicated that the mere act of watching them has become something of a Saw<\/a> <\/em>trap for our minds. <\/p>\n Don\u2019t believe me? Here\u2019s my best explanation of the curse at the center of the latest Netflix horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen<\/em>: The main character will die if she doesn\u2019t marry her soulmate by sundown on her wedding day. How does she know if the person that she\u2019s about to marry is her soulmate? Well, that\u2019s pretty much the entire metaphor. But here\u2019s the other part: The curse carries on to the next generation. So, if she chooses to leave her significant other at the altar, the curse transfers to his<\/em> family\u2019s bloodline instead. If you can find a loophole, please let me know. Because\u2014spoiler alert\u2014no one does. <\/p>\n Uh-oh, one of the Stranger Things<\/em> kids is drawing another diagram. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen <\/em>is executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers<\/a>\u2014the creative duo behind Stranger Things<\/a><\/em>. <\/a>The siblings are no stranger to complicated plots. The fifth and final season<\/a> of their own hit Netflix series featured multiple scenes wherein characters explained exactly what was about to happen using nearby household objects\u2014making claims that Netflix asks creators to restate plot points<\/a> for audiences scrolling on their phones that much more believable.<\/p>\n But the Duffers aren\u2019t alone in this. While other horror shows might not have the same attention span problems as Netflix, they\u2019ve certainly still caught a case of overcomplicated-itis.<\/p>\n Take for example: HBO Max\u2019s IT: Welcome to Derry<\/a><\/em>. The streamer\u2019s foray into Stephen King<\/a>\u2019s horror classic was beloved by many fans because it was actually<\/em> scary<\/em> television. But in the season 1 finale in December, showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane introduced several new elements<\/a> to Pennywise\u2019s origin story. According to Welcome to Derry, <\/em>the killer clown experiences the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. \u201cTomorrow, yesterday, it\u2019s all the same for little Pennywise!\u201d Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd\u2019s killer clown tells the horrified children. Apparently, an immortal, shapeshifting alien clown that feeds on fear wasn\u2019t complicated enough.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re looking for answers there, no one from IT: Welcome to Derry <\/em>has really provided any clarity about this new nonlinear time twist. As Andy Muschietti told Deadline<\/a> <\/em>in December, \u201cHow is that [possible] and why, that\u2019s a whole exploration that we intend to flesh out during the next two seasons.\u201d <\/p>\n How does<\/em> Pennywise exist outside of time?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n Well, that season 2 renewal<\/a> hasn\u2019t come around yet. But you know what other horror series is inexplicably returning for a fourth <\/em>season this month? MGM+\u2019s From<\/em>. The story, which is constantly compared to Lost <\/em>in both tone and function, follows the residents of a creepy town that traps people inside once they enter it. Horrible monsters also patrol the perimeter at night, seeking to rout out those who wish to escape. So, as the characters attempt to figure out the mystery, From <\/em>turns into another one of those shows that answers one question by creating a dozen more. <\/p>\n Don\u2019t get me wrong: These kinds of plots are still fun to watch. There\u2019s a reason why Paradise<\/a><\/em>\u2019s twists keep audiences coming back every week, or why Yellowjackets<\/a> <\/em>captured viewers with its mysterious symbols and supernatural nightmares. If the plot simply made sense from the beginning, then there\u2019s no reason to watch anymore. But that doesn\u2019t mean every horror series needs to confound me into oblivion. <\/p>\n All TV creators have to do is look to their big-screen counterparts, who are racking up critical and commercial acclaim\u2014as well as award nominations.<\/a> Recent indie horror films like Barbarian <\/em>played on the simple idea of a monster hiding in the basement of your Airbnb. Weapons<\/a><\/em>, by the same director, turned out to be about a witch. Nope<\/a>\u2019s <\/em>reveal was as classic as the crop-circle aliens in Signs<\/em>, and Ari Aster\u2019s Hereditary<\/a> <\/em>let all the horrifying lore just fester in the background to craft the perfect sense of dread throughout the entire film. <\/p>\n Viewers don\u2019t need that much plot.
