{"id":2350825,"date":"2026-03-30T01:29:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T01:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2350825"},"modified":"2026-03-30T01:29:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T01:29:48","slug":"new-orleans-masakowski-family-release-two-worlds-music-gambit-weekly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/new-orleans-masakowski-family-release-two-worlds-music-gambit-weekly\/","title":{"rendered":"New Orleans&#8217; Masakowski Family release &#8216;Two Worlds&#8217; | Music | Gambit Weekly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" false=\"\">\n                                <meta itemprop=\"isAccessibleForFree\" content=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>New Orleans guitarist Steve Masakowski performed with pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. often over the years.<\/p>\n<p>For a time, they had a duo gig at Tyler\u2019s Beer Garden <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/gambit\/news\/blake_pontchartrain\/blake-pontchartrain-when-jazz-fest-wasnt-just-at-the-track\/article_6185959e-c027-11ec-b8b2-47168062ab0b.html\" target=\"_blank\">on Magazine Street<\/a>, and Marsalis was the featured pianist on Masakowski\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stevemasakowski.bandcamp.com\/album\/friends\" target=\"_blank\">1991 album, \u201cFriends,\u201d<\/a> with drummer Herlin Riley, saxophonist Rick Margitza, bassist Bill Huntington and pianist Mike Pellera.<\/p>\n<p>When Marsalis retired as chair of the University of New Orleans\u2019 Jazz Studies program, which he founded, Masakowski stepped into that role, a position he held until his own retirement in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>So when Marsalis died in April 2020 \u2014 during the early days of the Covid pandemic \u2014 the Snug Harbor jazz club turned to Masakowski as well as his daughter, vocalist Sasha Masakowski, and son, bassist Martin Masakowski, for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LXaRgxPUOeM?si=nIYuxIch9mwtXjWl\" target=\"_blank\">a tribute performance<\/a> to the influential pianist. Among the songs in the beautiful set was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0OvyigELQvI&amp;t=90s\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSweet Dreams,\u201d<\/a> a piece Steve wrote for his \u201cFriends\u201d album, with new lyrics written by Sasha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to play that at Tyler\u2019s with Ellis and just kind of put it on the shelf for many years now until after Ellis passed and I brought it out,\u201d Steve says, \u201cand Sasha did such a great job writing lyrics to it, put it into a whole new dimension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A new recording of \u201cSweet Dreams\u201d now appears on the new Masakowski Family album, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stevemasakowski.bandcamp.com\/album\/two-worlds\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTwo Worlds,\u201d<\/a> which is out Friday, April 3. The meaningful, full-length jazz record features Steve, Sasha and Martin along with exceptional musicians and friends drummer Brian Blade, saxophonist Rex Gregory and pianist Oscar Rossignoli. Ulrike Maria Masakowski, Steve\u2019s wife and Sasha and Martin\u2019s mother, created the artwork for the album.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Steve Masakowski Family &amp; Friends - Two Worlds - Official Music Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LUc6mBfzz-c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Those uncertain early days of the pandemic and the tribute to Marsalis left Sasha with a feeling of urgency, she says. Sasha, who also is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sashamasakowski.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">a composer and electronic musician<\/a> under the name Tra$h Magnolia, produced \u201cTwo Worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt this kind of urgency of like, I want to document what we\u2019re doing as a family right now,\u201d Sasha says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo Worlds\u201d also gets to the heart of how music and heritage are passed down in New Orleans, from generation to generation, Sasha adds.<\/p>\n<p>Steve, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/steve-masakowski.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">a celebrated guitarist<\/a> and innovator, was mentored by Marsalis and Danny Barker and performed with James Black, Willie Tee, Earl Turbinton and other New Orleans greats. Sasha and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/martinmasakowski.com\/music\/music.html\" target=\"_blank\">Martin<\/a> grew up surrounded by music \u2014 their mother also is a classical pianist \u2014 and became celebrated, innovative professional musicians themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The Masakowskis have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/masakowskifamily.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">recorded together<\/a> several times before, including the Nola Nova record \u201cWetland,\u201d the 2017 album \u201cN.O. Escape\u201d and a Christmas record in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Further driving home the deep ties on \u201cTwo Worlds,\u201d Blade, Gregory and Rossignoli each also studied with Steve.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics to \u201cSweet Dreams\u201d are \u201ckind of speaking of life after death. And do the ancestors have a way of knowing what the future holds for us?\u201d Sasha says. \u201cTying it into this evolution of music and how it\u2019s passed from generation to generation, but it still lives on with the elders who are no longer with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo Worlds,\u201d though, is a forward-looking record and made mostly of originals by Steve, Sasha and Martin. The group recorded the album at Marigny Studios with engineer Mack Major, and it was mixed by Mike Marciano.<\/p>\n<p>The album opens with the title track, composed by Steve during the pandemic. The isolation inspired Sasha\u2019s lyrics about \u201ctwo young hearts\u201d separating and living worlds apart.<\/p>\n<p>Influences from Sasha\u2019s work <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/trash_magnolia\/\" target=\"_blank\">in electronic music<\/a> also can be heard, especially in her vocal production and on her originals \u201cOrigin of Sin\u201d and \u201cShine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I wrote \u2018Shine,\u2019 I was listening to a lot of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meshell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meshell Ndegeocello<\/a>, who I think is one of the most brilliant producers, bassists, composers out there,\u201d she says. \u201cYou kind of hear those undercurrents. And in using the voice as an instrument \u2014 on my electronic projects, I would use synthesizers, but on this project, there\u2019s no synths, so what I do is use my voice to add these textures and these layers and add vocal pads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1465252634\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=3149453113\/transparent=true\/\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Martin draws on his background playing and studying Eastern European and Middle Eastern styles for his song \u201cLas Sonrisas del Mar.\u201d The rhythm is based on the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudforguitarists.com\/jurjunah-rhythm\/\" target=\"_blank\">jurjunah rhythm<\/a>, an Iranian groove, Martin says, along with influences from Armenian pianist and composer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tigranhamasyan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tigran Hamasyan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real benefit of growing up here, and maybe with this household in particular, is the concept of finding your own sound and not having a direct set of rules to follow,\u201d Martin says. It\u2019s \u201cthe idea of playing music and developing your own sound and having the creativity drive you forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sole non-original on \u201cTwo Worlds\u201d is a piece written by New Orleans drummer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fogcityrecords.com\/jamesblack\" target=\"_blank\">James Black<\/a>, \u201cA Love Song.\u201d Sasha also wrote new lyrics for the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Steve played with Black quite a bit before he died in 1988, including in Steve\u2019s experimental, electronic jazz project Mars. That project also featured Lawrence Sieberth on keys and bassist James Singleton.<\/p>\n<p>Black \u201cwas an amazing musician. He also played trumpet, piano, [and] he was a great composer. There\u2019s a lot of his compositions that are in the \u2018Silverbook\u2019 that Harold Battiste put together,\u201d Steve says. \u201cThe only recording of [\u2018A Love Song\u2019] that I know of is one David Torkanowsky did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Love Song\u2019 is one of the most beautiful ballads,\u201d Sasha adds. \u201cThe chords are intricate and the melody is so beautiful \u2026 It just kind of shows the level of depth and musicality that James Black had. We wanted to record that and keep this song alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1465252634\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=4039249872\/transparent=true\/\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sasha and Martin care deeply about their family\u2019s and the city\u2019s musical heritage, but honoring tradition doesn\u2019t mean being stuck in place, says Sasha, who has worked with boundary-pushing artists like Nicholas Payton and Zach Danziger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pulse of music right now is on this kind of experimentation between jazz music and electronic music and pop and R&amp;B and hip-hop,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tradition of New Orleans modern jazz greats is you\u2019re pushing the music forward,\u201d Sasha adds. \u201cYou\u2019re constantly innovating. You\u2019re constantly reinventing the wheel. You\u2019re exploring as every artist should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Masakowski Family &amp; Friends will perform <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nojazzfest.com\/music-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thursday, April 30<\/a>, at the New Orleans Jazz &amp; Heritage Festival.
