Cheap Trick are well known for their 1979 live album \u201cAt Budokan.\u201d Photo courtesy of @pureimaginationfestival on Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As someone who primarily listens to music that was released before I was born, it can be a challenge for \u201cnew music\u201d to find its way onto my playlists and into regular rotation.\u00a0While\u00a0few\u00a0and far\u00a0between, a select gathering of tracks seem to reveal themselves\u00a0every month\u00a0through being suggested after playlists\u00a0finish\u00a0or shuffling artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are three songs, all released over 40 years ago, that made it through the cracks and onto my Spotify \u201cOn Repeat\u201d playlist\u00a0in March.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSouthern Girls\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Cheap Trick\u00a0(1977)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I heard\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hvk7tkrhunc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cSouthern Girls\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a few times\u00a0throughout the beginning of\u00a0this\u00a0year, but it\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0until early this month that I found myself seeking out the song. Better late than never, however, as the track has consistently\u00a0been a go-to for me when opening Spotify over the last few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opening with a rollicking, cymbal-driven drum track from Bun E. Carlos, the song never loses steam through the rapid-fire lyrics and well-placed guitar licks.\u00a0The piano is\u00a0a\u00a0subtle but welcome\u00a0touch,\u00a0and its combination with the bass pulls the lower end out in the mix.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The up-tempo section in the middle caught me off guard\u00a0during\u00a0my first few\u00a0listens but\u00a0makes for a satisfying return to a descending final\u00a0verse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lively single may be even better live\u00a0in concert, as the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NjwREnbzxi8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cBUDOKAN! Photo courtesy of @pureimaginationfestival on Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cLawyers in Love\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014\u00a0Jackson Browne\u00a0(1983)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GaZp4fJVHmQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lawyers in Love<\/a>\u201d is a peculiar track. As is the case with much of Browne\u2019s best work, the production holds up with anything released today.\u00a0The song\u00a0slides seamlessly from organ-driven soft rock to extraterrestrial synth,\u00a0with bending guitar chords\u00a0and a tom-heavy drum part\u00a0connecting it throughout.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What does date the song, though, is the lyrical\u00a0commentary on politics during the Cold War.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0As a history buff, the words are\u00a0half of the fun in hearing the song.\u00a0For a listener less concerned with the past and more interested in just finding a good tune, the lyrics may fall\u00a0flat,\u00a0but the instrumental\u00a0won\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou Got\u00a0Lucky\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers\u00a0(1982)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mtLpZWNyM0I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You Got Lucky<\/a>\u201d is a showcase for the underrated Heartbreakers\u00a0keyboardist\u00a0Benmont Tench.\u00a0The\u00a0eerie track trades in Petty\u2019s prototypical guitars for a synth-based\u00a0sound to\u00a0great effect, as\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0unlike anything else in the band\u2019s catalog.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the first few listens, it was hard to place what the track was reminiscent of. I landed on Foreigner synths mixed with the blues, though there is\u00a0definitely some\u00a0new wave\u00a0tucked\u00a0in\u00a0there.
