Rated R. In theaters April 3.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Good thing it\u2019s called \u201cThe Drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nice name like \u201cThe Wedding\u201d would be extremely misleading. Even \u201cThe Couple\u201d could end up a date-night disaster. Titling this\u00a0oddity\u00a0\u201cThe <em>Drama<\/em>\u201d is, at least, not a bait and switch.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if there are some furious theater walkouts about half an hour into the shocking A24 movie starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when a nuclear revelation completely rewires this tricky movie\u2019s whole identity. What exactly am I watching here? Well, what you definitely are not at is a romantic comedy. Don\u2019t enter expecting to smile. Many will leave having experienced \u201cThe Trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the brave, avoid any spoilers or even vague whispers at all costs. Going in cold, you\u2019ll never guess the bombshell. Be warned: When the scene arrives, you might absolutely loathe it.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Even if what happens after that jaw-dropper doesn\u2019t pack the same punch \u2014 how can it? \u2014 much of \u201cThe Drama\u201d is gripping, quite stressfully so, and sometimes stomach-churning in the topical subjects it touches.<\/p>\n<p>Look, this is not a pleasant experience. But it\u2019s an admirably tough one to shake.<\/p>\n<p>The unhinged film, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, begins with Pattinson\u2019s neurotic Charlie eyeing a cool girl, Emma, at a coffee shop.<\/p>\n<p>He quietly waits until she gets up to use the bathroom, dashes over and quickly snaps a picture of the book she\u2019s reading. Then he lies to Emma, who is deaf in one ear, that it\u2019s one of his favorite novels. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Zendaya stars as Emma in the new movie \u201cThe Drama.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, fidgety Charlie\u2019s a stalker creep, right? Maybe. But his little fib works. The film fast-forwards to the week of their wedding. Charlie, a museum curator, is hard at work on his gushy groom speech and Emma is making final touches to the catering menu and the DJ.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re a sweet pair. Regardless of their inarguable good looks, both have an outcast aura and together they share a\u00a0geeky\u00a0shorthand. A good match, you think.<\/p>\n<p>And then, er, things change.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Charlie (Robert Pattinson) and Emma\u2019s relationship takes a turn after an explosive revelation. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Like a solar eclipse, \u201cThe Drama\u201d abruptly darkens. The viewer watches on in a state of petrified nervousness bordering on dread as their lives unravel.<\/p>\n<p>You genuinely don\u2019t know who you\u2019re dealing with or what they\u2019re going to do\u00a0next. Jokes are still cracked, but\u00a0exclusively the\u00a0morbid\u00a0sort.<\/p>\n<p>Borgli\u2019s scenes are fast and disorienting. Some are from the characters\u2019 imaginations. Others are flashbacks going back months or years.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0spiraling\u00a0present, Charlie\u2019s idiosyncrasies, which were initially endearing, become the twitches and stutters of a\u00a0sleepless\u00a0paranoiac. Emma\u2019s stylish, put-together exterior starts to freak you out.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Pattinson and Zendaya ably switch from bliss to torment. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That Zendaya and Pattinson so ably flip the switch speaks to their skill for genre hopping \u2014 from \u201cHarry Potter\u201d to \u201cMickey 17;\u201d \u201cEuphoria\u201d to \u201cSpider-Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time it\u2019s from\u00a0bliss\u00a0to torment. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are just a few other characters, mainly another couple, Mike (Mamoudou Athie) and Rachel (Alana Haim), who are their best man and maid of honor.<\/p>\n<p>Athie is a grounded actor, a preternatural voice of reason who has the calm of a therapist advising a screaming patient. And Haim, who was exceptional in \u201cLicorice Pizza,\u201d embodies everybody\u2019s judgemental Sunday brunch friend. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim play the couple\u2019s friends Mike and Rachel.  <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s not oversharing to say that the movie fits neatly in the family of \u201cHow well do you know the person you share your bed with?\u201d films.<\/p>\n<p>But the unsaid question posed here \u2014 \u201cWhat would I do if I learned this game-changing information about my betrothed?\u201d \u2014 is explosively provocative.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThe Drama\u201d will likely be one of the most controversial movies of the year. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It can and will fuel hours of heated debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Drama,\u201d for all its heat, is not perfect. I wasn\u2019t won over by its climactic series of calamities that fall in rapid succession like dominoes at the end.<\/p>\n<p>However, most movies are completely forgotten by the credits. This one, like it or not, lingers for days.
