\u201cAuthoritarian governments go after the arts first. Because the arts have the power to reach inside of people and change the molecular structure from the inside out.\u201d<\/p>\n

While appearing on\u00a0PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton<\/em>, actor Billy Porter\u00a0discussed<\/a>\u00a0how the Trump administration\u2019s recent actions, including the attack on civil liberties, are affecting opportunities for Black people, as well as queer folks.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the Advocat<\/em>e, Porter\u00a0attended<\/a>\u00a0a demonstration in Washington, D.C., in front of the Kennedy Center with the likes of Jane Fonda, Joan Baez, and Jim Acosta the Friday before the last round of \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests, \u201cas artists warn that President Donald Trump\u2019s cultural agenda is threatening creative independence at one of the nation\u2019s flagship institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his Saturday visit with Sharpton, Porter, best known for his work in Broadway\u2019s Kinky Boots<\/em>, laid out his fears. <\/p>\n

\u201cAuthoritarian governments go after the arts first,\u201d Porter said. \u201cBecause the arts have the power to reach inside of people and change the molecular structure from the inside out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porter has already felt the effects of the current administration directly. \u201cAs a Black gay out artist, I caught the wave of what we now know as performative wokeness,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I crashed through glass ceilings that were concrete. And I have noticed the opportunities slowly drying up for the work that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s noted that with programming that\u2019s on now. \u201cThe Midwest CBS shows and the cop shows\u2026 all of that stuff still exists,\u201d Porter said, according to the Advocate<\/em>. \u201cBut when it\u2019s time to talk about heart, when it\u2019s time to talk about connection, when it\u2019s time to talk about people that don\u2019t look like everybody else\u2026there\u2019s not a lot of that work going on right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Porter does knows that people have to meet the challenges the Trump administration keeps erecting. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the normal resistance,\u201d Porter said. \u201cWe have to redefine what going high looks like in this new world order. We have a government who does not follow the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n
