Jen Shah<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0dropped some surprising bombshells about her marriage, life behind bars and more in her first interview since being released from prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was wrong,\u201d Shah, 52, told People<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday, April 1, about what led to her 33-month prison sentence. \u201cI made wrong decisions. I should have done things differently. I should have been more diligent. And I\u2019m deeply remorseful and sorry for my actions and for my part. I take full responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former Real Housewives of Salt Lake City<\/em><\/a> star reflected on her legal issues, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s a long and a very complex journey that brought me to this point. And without relitigating it, I became involved in the case because I made horrible business decisions and I disregarded huge red flags. I allowed the lines to be blurred between personal friendships and ethical business practices. And in essence, I trusted the wrong people at a very vulnerable time in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shah said she \u201cthought I was doing the right thing for the majority of the time\u201d while working in direct response marketing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Real Housewives of Salt Lake City alum Jen Shah is a free woman. After serving less than three years of her six-and-a-half-year sentence for her role in a long-running nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme, the Bravo star was released from the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, on December 10, 2025. \u201cJen Shah has demonstrated [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI was working under people who were running these companies. \u2026 What happened was down the line, people that I worked with were working with a lot of other people,\u201d she claimed. \u201cOnce that initial fulfillment was happening, things were happening beyond the point of sale with that customer that I didn\u2019t know about.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cIt can happen if you\u2019re not careful, if you\u2019re not being diligent and you\u2019re not paying attention to the red flags. But you have a responsibility once you\u2019re in that position to make sure it doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shah went on to describe<\/a> the \u201cvulnerable\u201d time in her life during which she \u201ctrusted the wrong people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s important for me to say \u2014 and I need to let people know \u2014 was at the same time, my involvement in this conspiracy overlapped with my own personal pain,\u201d Shah shared. \u201cMy husband [Sharrieff \u2018Coach\u2019 Shah] and I were separated. We were on the verge of a divorce. I was overwhelmed with immense grief from the death of my grandmother, my father and my aunt, all in a very short period of time. I was spiraling deeper into my previously diagnosed clinical depression.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cAnd the reason I say all that is not as an excuse. Because it\u2019s not like I was making good business decisions and then I woke up one morning and all of a sudden it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, I made a bad business decision.\u2019 This is the totality of everything that was going on and the overlapping of what I was dealing with personally. And I tried to avoid and numb all of that with alcohol and just avoid it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shah has been keeping a low profile since her release from Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, on December 10, 2025. At the time, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson confirmed that she was transferred from the Federal Prison Camp to complete the remaining portion of her sentence under supervision. It was unclear whether she was sent home or to a halfway house.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeing a Real Housewife can be messy, including on camera screaming matches, legal woes and event arrests. However, there are only a few franchise stars who have actually gone to jail for their scandals. The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah began a six and a half-year prison sentence in February 2023 [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Upon her release, Judge Sidney Stein<\/strong> also ordered Shah to serve five years of supervised release<\/a> \u201cto make sure you don\u2019t end up committing another crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shah had been in custody since February 17, 2023, for her role in a long-running nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme.<\/p>\n

Shah told People<\/em> why she ultimately accepted wrongdoing and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2022 after previously entering a not guilty plea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were actual victims as a result of this conspiracy. I had never seen anything with my own eyes. That changed things for me,\u201d she added. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m accepting responsibility, and I\u2019ve made it my mission to make sure that people are paid back.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was arrested in March 2021 and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing and conspiracy to commit money laundering. As part of her plea deal, the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office agreed to drop the second charge against her.<\/p>\n
