In a break from decades of tradition, the band walked onto the stage in total darkness, visible to the crowd only in hazy silhouette. Springsteen came out last, and addressed the capacity crowd at the Target Center in Minneapolis, speaking much like he did at the city\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bruce-springsteen-streets-of-minneapolis-no-kings-rally-1235538563\/\">No Kings rally a few days earlier.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI want to begin the night with a prayer for our men and women overseas,\u201d he said. \u201cWe pray for their safe return. The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock &amp; roll in dangerous times. We are here in celebration and defense of our American ideals, democracy, our Constitution, and our sacred American promise. The America that I love, the America that I\u2019ve written about for 50 years, that\u2019s been a beacon of hope and liberty around the world, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, racist, reckless, and treasonous administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cTonight,\u201d he continued, \u201cwe ask all of you to join with us in choosing hope over fear, democracy over authoritarianism, the rule of law over lawlessness, ethics over unbridled corruption, resistance over complacency, unity over division, and peace over war.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Live From Minneapolis (3\/31\/2026)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7pRya78tAAo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs final word \u201cwar\u201d echoed through the arena, the stage lights flicked on. Springsteen and the band emerged from the darkness, and they ripped into Edwin Starr\u2019s 1970 classic \u201cWar,\u201d which they hadn\u2019t played since America last started a Middle Eastern war in 2003. It was a fiery rendition featuring special guest Tom Morello on guitar, allowing Springsteen to roam the stage instrument-free, and it transitioned right into an impassioned \u201cBorn in the U.S.A.,\u201d a song <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bruce-springsteen-aclu-born-in-the-u-s-a-1235535350\/\">Springsteen recently allowed the ACLU to use<\/a> in their battle to overturn Trump\u2019s anti-birthright citizenship executive order. (In remarkable timing, the Supreme Court was a little over 12 hours away from hearing oral arguments in the landmark case about whether people born in the U.S.A. are citizens.)<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIf these were ordinary times, this tour wouldn\u2019t even be happening. Springsteen has worked heavily on the road in recent years, and was planning to move his attention toward a new solo record. But these are nothing close to ordinary times. And after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of ICE officers in January, Springsteen felt his response couldn\u2019t be limited to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bruce-springsteen-minneapolis-killings-protest-song-1235506221\/\">his new protest song \u201cStreets of Minneapolis,\u201d<\/a> and appearances at a handful of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/no-kings\/\" id=\"auto-tag_no-kings\" data-tag=\"no-kings\">No Kings<\/a> rallies. He decided to convene the E Street Band with little notice, book arenas across the country, beginning in the town that served as the epicenter of the ICE resistance movement, and channel his righteous fury into something productive and unifying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe result was a band with a renewed set of purpose, and one of the most inspiring rock concerts I\u2019ve ever seen. Songs Springsteen has played almost to the point of exhaustion over the years somehow sounded as fresh as the day he wrote them. This was clear early in the night when the spotlight hit him during the bridge of \u201cNo Surrender\u201d (\u201cThere\u2019s a war outside still raging\/You say it ain\u2019t ours anymore to win\/I want to sleep beneath\/Peaceful skies in my lover\u2019s bed),\u201d and it was suddenly about the war in Iran without a single lyrical alteration. Moments like that happened over and over throughout the three-hour set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPrior to the E Street Band premiere of \u201cStreets of Minneapolis,\u201d Springsteen again spoke to the crowd. \u201cThis past winter, federal troops brought death and terror to the streets of Minneapolis,\u201d he said. \u201cWell, they picked the wrong town. The power of solidarity, of the people of Minneapolis, was an inspiration to the entire country. Your strength and your commitment told us this is still America, and this will not stand. Minnesota, you gave us hope. You gave us courage. And for those who gave their lives, Renee Good, mother of three, brutally murdered, and Alex Pretti, VA nurse, executed by ICE and left to die in the street without even the decency of our lawless government investigating their deaths. Amazingly, there didn\u2019t seem to be a single boo or any cries of dissent. Springsteen\u2019s right-wing fans clearly got the message that this show wasn\u2019t for them. (And it wasn\u2019t a very subtle message since he slapped the No Kings logo onto many of the tour posters.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPolitics took a brief reprieve for a <em>River<\/em> double shot of \u201cOut in the Street\u201d and \u201cHungry Heart.\u201d On the latter tune, Springsteen made the seemingly impromptu decision to shove the mic into Max Weinberg\u2019s face and have him sing a few lines of the chorus, much to the amusement of the other band members. (Weinberg is a man of many talents, but singing is most definitely not one of them.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe calendar moved from 1980 to the 1999\/2000 E Street Band reunion tour for \u201cYoungstown,\u201d \u201cMurder Incorporated,\u201d and \u201cAmerican Skin (41 Shots).\u201d Tom Morello had been off the stage since the opening trio of songs, but he returned for \u201cAmerican Skin (41 Shots)\u201d to play his guitar part from the 2014 <em>High Hopes<\/em> studio rendition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((683\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"u-border-color-black u-border-lr-2 lrv-u-padding-tb-025 lrv-u-padding-lr-075 lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-text-align-center a-font-basic-secondary-s\">Springsteen and the E-Street Band in Minneapolis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Jesse Roberson for Rolling Stone<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMorello stuck around for \u201cLong Walk Home,\u201d which Springsteen introduced as \u201ca prayer for our country.\u201d He wrote that prayer in response to George W. Bush\u2019s assault on our constitutional order back in 2007, and nobody could have imagined that nearly 20 years later we\u2019d be even further away from the American home that our founders once envisioned. (Coincidentally, Neil Young revived his own \u201cLong Walk Home\u201d on tour last summer. It\u2019s a different song with a near identical message, proving that great minds indeed think alike.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe stage cleared so Springsteen could deliver a solo acoustic rendition of \u201cHouse of a Thousand Guitars\u201d from 2020\u2019s <em>Letter to You<\/em>. The song survived a mere two shows of the 2023 <em>Letter to You<\/em> tour before it was dropped, but lines like \u201cthe criminal clown has stolen the throne\/he steals what he can never own\u201d have much greater resonance with Trump back in the White House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen the band returned, keyboardist Roy Bittan softly played the opening of \u201cMy City of Ruins\u201d while Springsteen delivered yet another address. \u201cHere in the States, we are living through some very dark times,\u201d he said. \u201cOur American values that have sustained us for 250 years are being challenged as never before\u2026Our justice department has completely abdicated its independence, and our attorney general, Pam Bondi, takes her marching orders straight from a corrupt White House. She prosecutes our president\u2019s perceived enemies, covers up for his misdeeds, and protects his powerful friends. And this is happening now\u2026So many of our elected leaders have failed us that this American tragedy can only be stopped by the American people. So join us and let\u2019s fight for the America that we love. Are you with us?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs the crowd roared in approval, Springsteen began to sing a gospel-tinged \u201cMy City of Ruins.\u201d This is a very malleable song that was originally written in 2000 as a tribute to Springsteen\u2019s decaying hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey. A year later, he repurposed it as an ode to New York City following 9\/11. And after Clarence Clemons died in 2011, it was again reborn in honor of the late saxophonist. But the city in ruins is now all of America, and the \u201crise up\u201d refrain at the end has become a call to take to the streets and demand justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMorello appeared again for \u201cThe Ghost of Tom Joad,\u201d and the main set wrapped up with \u201cBadlands\u201d and \u201cLand of Hope and Dreams,\u201d before the house lights came on for encores of \u201cBorn to Run,\u201d \u201cBobby Jean,\u201d \u201cDancing in the Dark,\u201d and \u201cTenth Avenue Freeze-Out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven though it\u2019s been a standard encore for quite some time, \u201cRosalita\u201d did not come out. Fans instead received a surprise cover of Prince\u2019s \u201cPurple Rain,\u201d dedicated to the \u201cmaestro,\u201d with Morello and Nils Lofgren teaming up for the climactic guitar solo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThese are the hard times, but we\u2019ll make it through,\u201d Springsteen said, concluding on a brighter note. \u201cThis is a tour that was not planned. We\u2019re here tonight because we need to feel your hope, and your strength. We want to bring some hope and some strength to you. I hope we did that. All I can say is God bless Alex Pretti, God bless Renee Good, God bless you, and God bless America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpringsteen said goodbye to the audience by breaking out \u201cChimes of Freedom\u201d for the first time in America since 1988. Bob Dylan wrote that song during a dark time in American history when civil rights marchers were being brutally beaten in the streets, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 seemed unlikely to survive unified Southern opposition in the House of Representatives. But Dylan\u2019s words still permeate with hope that a brighter future is just around the corner, despite the \u201cmad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat same hail is falling right now. It\u2019s impossible to know when it will stop.
