Jesse Tyler Ferguson<\/a> is sharing new insight into how his family dealt with a recent loss.<\/p>\n Back in February, the Modern Family<\/a> alum revealed via Instagram<\/a> that his dog, Leaf, had passed away. \u201cWe had to say goodbye to our sweet little prince Leaf today,\u201d he wrote alongside photos of Leaf with himself and his family over the years on February 9. \u201cHe was the best little pup & has been with us since the very beginning \u2014 15 incredible years together. Our first. We love you and will miss your licks, snuggles & barks, sweet guy.\u201d<\/p>\n Ferguson opened up about saying goodbye to his beloved pet on the Tuesday, March 31, episode<\/a> of his Dinner\u2019s On Me podcast. While chatting with his guest, Jenna Dewan<\/a>, Ferguson shared that he and his family had to put Leaf down earlier that day.<\/p>\n \u201cI had to put my dog down today, and it wasn\u2019t a surprise, though,\u201d he said of Leaf, who was 15. \u201cWe sort of have thought this might be the case for a while. I\u2019m leaving town [at] the end of the week to do a play in New York, and I was having such anxiety about being away when it might have to happen. And, in the last few days, he just, like, took a turn.\u201d<\/p>\n Ferguson said the \u201cbright lining\u201d of the sad situation was that he got to be with Leaf on his last day. \u201cI was really, really happy I could,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n Dewan, for her part, said she has \u201cdealt with multiple versions of having to put my dog down\u201d in the past. \u201cThere\u2019s no good way it happens. However, I did this with my recent dog we had to put down, Mika. She was 18 and also small, and it was right before the birth of my last baby, Rhiannon,\u201d she shared. \u201cAnd it was the same thing. I was like, \u2018Oh, my gosh. How am I going to do this and [give] birth,\u2019 and it just happened. She woke one morning, [and] I was like, \u2018Oh, this is the end.\u2019 I know that feeling. It\u2019s so hard.\u201d (Dewan shares her eldest daughter, Everly, with her ex-husband, Channing Tatum<\/a>, and her younger two kids, Callum and Rhiannon, with her fianc\u00e9, Steve Kazee<\/a>.)<\/p>\n Ferguson went on to note that he has been \u201cstruggling\u201d with how to talk about Leaf\u2019s declining health with his children. He shares his two sons, Beckett and Sullivan, with his husband, Justin Mikita.<\/p>\n \u201cI know there\u2019s some good books. I mean, we\u2019ve read some of them in preparation. But this morning, knowing that this afternoon we were gonna put Leaf, we told Beckett, our 5-and-a-half-year-old, because we felt like \u2014 \u2019cause he lost my mom,\u201d Ferguson detailed. \u201cWe lost my mom a little over a year ago, so he was able to process, like, what it means when someone just is no longer here.\u201d<\/p>\n While Ferguson said his youngest child \u201cdoesn\u2019t really understand\u201d Leaf\u2019s passing just yet, he told Dewan that Beckett \u201cwas able to say goodbye\u201d but \u201cgot very emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n At the time Ferguson announced Leaf\u2019s death via Instagram, several celebrities offered their condolences in the post\u2019s comments. \u201cI loved Leaf the most! So sorry,\u201d Dan Levy<\/a> wrote, while Elizabeth Banks<\/a> posted, \u201cSo so sorry for this loss.\u201d Busy Philipps<\/a> shared, \u201cOh, sending you all love.\u201d<\/p>\n Rhea Seehorn<\/a> shared, \u201cOh, no. So, so sorry.
