Prince Philip<\/strong><\/a> wanted one last hurrah before he died.<\/p>\n The late Duke of Edinburgh \u2014 who passed away on April 9, 2021 \u2014 reportedly snuck away from his nurses<\/a> that morning and went to have one final drink.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Article continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Prince Philip retired from public duties in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n According to Hugo Vickers<\/strong>‘ new book about Queen Elizabeth<\/strong><\/a>, Philip \u201cgave his nurses the slip \u2026 helped himself to a beer and drank it in the Oak Room\u201d of Windsor Castle at the time. <\/p>\n The royal, who was 99 when he died,<\/a> was just three months shy of his milestone 100th birthday. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Article continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Prince Philip spent much of his time at Sandringham.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cHe got up, had a bath, said he did not feel well and quietly slipped away,\u201d Vickers wrote. \u201cThere had often been times in earlier days when the Queen had asked the staff to let her know when Prince Philip was leaving, only to be told \u2018His Royal Highness left twenty minutes ago.’\u201d<\/p>\n Following his death, \u201cshe took the line that she was \u2018absolutely furious that, as so often in life, he left without saying goodbye.’\u201d<\/p>\n Philip retired from public duties in August 2017 after a meeting with the Royal Marines and spent much of his remaining time at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n MORE ON:<\/p>\n Prince Philip<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Want OK! each day? In the course of the next two and a half years, that was his home. He enjoyed his carriage-driving, read voraciously and painted a little.\u201d<\/p>\n The Queen would also occasionally visit on weekends, and \u201cin a sense they separated.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cPenny Romsey<\/strong>, the new Countess Mountbatten, often stayed with him there,” he penned about Romsey, who was a constant companion to Philip and a close friend of the royal family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n Prince Philip died at the age of 99 in April 2021.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cHe did not want to reach his 100th birthday, particularly disliking the fuss attendant at such events,\u201d Vickers also said. <\/p>\n \u201cDue to COVID rules, the number of mourners at Philip\u2019s funeral was restricted to 30,” he wrote. “Nothing would have delighted the Duke more than having such a pared-down farewell.\u201d<\/p>\n Philip’s funeral<\/a> took place at St George\u2019s Chapel in Windsor Castle on April 17, 2021, and was a slimmed-down service.
