From the outset, the band has gone where the vibes take them. \u201cThere\u2019s been no road map,\u201d Gordy Quist says. \u201cIt\u2019s just been following what feels right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Austin five-piece built around co-founders Quist and Ed Jurdi dropped a brand-new album, <em>Country Sides<\/em>, in February. It marks their first studio album since 2023\u2019s <em>Simple Things<\/em> and their first project overall since the <em>Hayes &amp; The Heathens <\/em>collaboration with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/hayes-carll-looks-inside-album-were-only-human-1235401872\/\">Hayes Carll<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Country Sides<\/em> is an 11-track LP that showcases the Heathens\u2019 range in melody and lyrics, drawing on sounds and styles that defined their two decades as a hard-driving <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/americana\/\" id=\"auto-tag_americana\" data-tag=\"americana\">Americana<\/a> outfit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cA trusted friend that\u2019s known the band a long time said to me that it feels like a greatest hits record without being a greatest hits record,\u201d Jurdi tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThe emotional tenor of it covers the whole history of the band through the songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a project the Heathens self-produced in Quist\u2019s studio, the Finishing School \u2014 the same space where Quist produced Carll\u2019s <em>We\u2019re Only Human<\/em> last year and where they recorded <em>Hayes &amp; The Heathens<\/em>. Like all their albums, they released it independently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe songs on <em>Country Sides<\/em> skew introspective and reflect the Heathens\u2019 evolution from a side project to a career, racking up a platinum-certified single (2011\u2019s cover of \u201cHurricane,\u201d first cut by Levon Helm in 1980)\u00a0along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt was kind of a career retrospective, in a weird way,\u201d Quist says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t set out to, literally, write a record about that. But a lot of the emotional content mirrors our 20-year journey from being young and inspired \u2014 hit the road at all costs and do 250 shows a year starting out, and finding a little bit of success as an independent band. The first single was \u201cHigh on Our Own Supply,\u201d a title that gives away the game. Lyrics like \u201cGetting high on our own supply, there\u2019s enough left to get us by\/when you\u2019re all alone and you need a song\u201d are buoyed by a bluesy backbeat and a heavy dose of keys in such a way that you could be forgiven for thinking it was a Helm cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe idea was the construction of the band, and living in the home of the music,\u201d Jurdi says. \u201cTo use a cliche drug reference that has nothing to do with drugs, that\u2019s what we get high on: the inspiration of new music, building songs, recording them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile Quist and Jurdi have been constants throughout the band\u2019s history, this record is the first that features keyboardist Trevor Nealon, drummer Clint Simmons, and bassist Nick Jay, although those three did tour with the band after the release of <em>Simple Things<\/em>. They often spend weeks or months producing their own work, but they went with gut instincts here. Jurdi says that\u2019s why the sounds that have come to define the band are so prevalent on <em>Country Sides<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cEveryone trusted each other in the studio,\u201d he says. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t a lot of second-guessing. A lot of first ideas were good this time. But that\u2019s only caused Jurdi and Quist to double down on the moment. If they were to suddenly lay out barometers for success now, they\u2019d be betraying the reasons they formed the band in the first place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cGrowing up at a time when rock &amp; roll was pretty \u2018fuck you,\u2019 and it was pretty anti-establishment, it wasn\u2019t about getting corporate sponsorships and placements or being an entertainer\u2026 it was about having a point of view, and that meant, sometimes, being difficult,\u201d Jurdi says. \u201cThe landscape has changed in a lot of ways as far as that goes. People being outlaw or bucking the system, whatever the sentiment is. It\u2019s weird now, because it\u2019s playing in an echo chamber a lot of times. It\u2019s not quite as outrageous as it might seem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJurdi points to the group\u2019s partnership with Carll, who is as fiercely independent as the Heathens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTheir 2024 collaboration and ensuing tour, which included a date opening for the Turnpike Troubadours at a sold-out Red Rocks in Colorado, was the result of two independent forces of nature coming together and realizing both sides benefitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe further into it we get you have a lot of friends, but it\u2019s rare to make a connection like that, with someone that wants to trust you and become a collaborative partner and bring you into their world,\u201d Jurdi says. \u201cIt\u2019s an affirmation of a lot of the work that we\u2019ve done and a lot of the seeds we\u2019ve planted. Those things come to fruition with Hayes. I think he\u2019s the best songwriter of our generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Heathens will spend the spring and summer touring behind <em>Country Sides<\/em>, highlighted by April dates at the Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee, and a slot on the Grand Ole Opry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat\u2019s enough for the band. They make a living. They have a studio and tour bus, and they got it on their terms. As both Quist and Jurdi look ahead, they prefer to stay independent. Sometimes I look around and I feel we get caught up in the comparison game, where you see all these other acts waving the independent, \u2018Oh, we\u2019re outlaws.
