{"id":2356729,"date":"2026-04-03T09:18:45","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T09:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2356729"},"modified":"2026-04-03T09:18:45","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T09:18:45","slug":"the-songs-are-the-boss-you-have-to-do-what-they-say-or-theyll-abandon-you-for-someone-else","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/the-songs-are-the-boss-you-have-to-do-what-they-say-or-theyll-abandon-you-for-someone-else\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe songs are the boss, you have to do what they say or they\u2019ll abandon you for someone else\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/u2\">U2<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-edge\">The Edge<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0opened up\u00a0about why the band felt the urgency to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/u2-mark-good-friday-with-another-surprise-new-ep-easter-lily-3938236\">surprise-release their new six-song EP \u2018Easter Lily\u2019<\/a>\u00a0on Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today (April 3), the Irish rock giants dropped the EP without fanfare, a follow-on from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/u2-surprise-release-politically-charged-days-of-ash-ep-these-songs-were-impatient-to-be-out-in-the-world-they-are-songs-of-defiance-and-dismay-3930166\">February\u2019s \u2018Days\u00a0Of\u00a0Ash\u2019 EP<\/a>, which was similarly released to coincide with\u00a0a seasonal religious milestone, Ash Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The songs on \u2018Easter Lily\u2019 have been described as \u201cmuch more reflective\u201d than those on the \u201cdefiant\u201d and\u00a0politically-charged\u00a0\u2018Days\u00a0Of\u00a0Ash\u2019,\u00a0with these tracks \u201cemerging\u00a0from a more personal, private place that some may retreat to\u00a0in\u00a0such times\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The band have\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/bono-on-u2-new-album-got-to-deal-with-past-to-get-to-present-3865470\">long been thought to be working in the studio on their 15th\u00a0album<\/a>, but in a new\u00a0digital e-zine edition of their long-running\u00a0<i>Propaganda\u00a0<\/i>fanzine,\u00a0The Edge has shed light on why they\u00a0ultimately decided\u00a0to release this group of songs as a separate project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wrote some songs meant for our\u00a0album\u00a0but they started to assert themselves in some unexpected ways, demanding special attention,\u201d he explained. \u201cTheir own devotional world, suggesting they didn\u2019t feel part of our album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Easter Lily EP\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/1DY06ZzIoHYFQ83jPfm9aF?go=1&amp;sp_cid=0caa2178f93bfa0eae3bbd0e458aa35b&amp;nd=1&amp;dlsi=9e0ab6b37f7544aa&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u00a0we folded \u2026 agreed to their timeline \u2026 which was Easter \u2026\u00a040 days\u00a0after Ash Wednesday \u2026 the songs are the boss, you have to do what they\u00a0say\u00a0or they\u2019ll abandon you for someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expanding on the two EPs arriving on key Christian festive days, he added:\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0no doubt this collection of songs\u00a0have\u00a0a kind of seasonal\u00a0bent\u00a0but I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0get too carried awa with the religious calendar here. The point is there are ceremonies and rituals some of us are missing in this most material of times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the\u00a054-page\u00a0<i>Propaganda\u00a0<\/i>e-zine,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/bono\">Bono<\/a>\u00a0shares a conversation with the Franciscan friar Richard Rohr, The Edge explores the inspiration behind each of the six new tracks, Adam Clayton discusses the EP\u2019s artwork and its connection to recovery and producer\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/jacknife-lee\">Jacknife\u00a0Lee<\/a>\u00a0gives an insight into the recording process. Check it all out\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/u2.lnk.to\/EasterLilyMicrosite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his interview, Jacknife Lee, who has worked with U2 since 2004\u2019s \u2018How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb\u2019, said that after the release of \u2018Days Of Ash\u2019, the band realised that \u201cthe album is not the work, for now. The work is about reacting to events in real time. Rock \u2018n\u2019 roll doesn\u2019t do that often anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo about two weeks ahead of Easter, the band said: \u2018If we\u2019re doing a record about the external world at the beginning of Lent, when you do fasting and contemplation and all those things, let\u2019s put an Easter EP out on Good Friday that is more about the internal response to things\u2019. We were discussing faith and\u00a0hope\u00a0so we leaned into that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Propaganda\u00a0<\/i>has been running since 1986 and was inspired by the \u201cpunk-era DIY zine culture that embraced attitude, ideas and dialogue\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"U2 - Resurrection Song\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j0I3Y2s93VI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As for their next full-length album, as far back as 2024,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/u2s-the-edge-says-their-new-album-is-not-a-straight-up-rock-thing-3813269\">The Edge said that it would not be \u201ca straight-up rock thing\u201d<\/a>,\u00a0while last summer,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/bono-ready-for-the-future-with-u2-and-band-have-25-great-songs-for-new-album-3869776\">Bono shared that he was \u201cready for the future\u201d with U2, with the band having written \u201c25 great songs<\/a>\u201d. Earlier this year while discussing the writing process, the\u00a0frontman\u00a0said that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/bono-on-u2-new-album-got-to-deal-with-past-to-get-to-present-3865470\">U2 were overcoming the past to make \u201cthe sound of the future<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel how progress on new music \u2013 which will mark the follow-up to 2017\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/u2-songs-experience-album-review-2166333\">\u2018Songs Of Experience\u2019<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 was shaping up, Bono responded: \u201cWe\u2019ve been in the studio and you\u2019ve sometimes got to deal with the past to get to the present, in order to make the sound of the future.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what we want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s the sound of four men, who feel like their lives depend on it. I remind them, they do. Nobody needs a new U2 album unless it\u2019s an extraordinary one.
