The Cyrus family has their own particular blend of magic. That\u2019s never been more evident than on Billy Ray Cyrus\u2019 new song, \u201cOn Our Way Along,\u201d which was written by his son, Braison Cyrus, and is sung alongside his daughter<\/a>, Noah Cyrus.<\/p>\n

In a conversation with American Songwriter ahead of the song\u2019s release, Billy Ray revealed that the track is based on his poem, \u201cStanding By the Fire.\u201d He penned the poem, which is about his Tennessee property, in 1997 for his greatest hits album, The Best of Billy Ray Cyrus: Cover to Cover<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was of this vision and this man that I saw here on the property as I was horseback riding at sunset one day. It was just quite a spiritual thing,\u201d Billy Ray recalled. \u201cBraison wrote the song about what I wrote in that poem over 20 years ago, when he was just a little boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about this hill, and realizing that my whole life unfolded on this hill, and the magic of this place here,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s all come full circle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The best part of the process, Billy Ray said, is that fact that working with his kids came about organically.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Braison\u2019s] like, \u2018Dad, I really want to produce an album on you, like, now.\u2019 I said, \u2018Well, you know what? Now\u2019s a really good time for me, because I really need to make some music,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cMusic is my therapy. That\u2019s my art. I just love making music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, Noah came on board to sing.<\/p>\n

\u201cNoah came on it and just sang her heart out,\u201d the proud dad boasted. \u201cOne of the things I\u2019m most excited about is people hearing Noah Cyrus sing like they\u2019ve never heard her sing before. I mean, it is a really, really great performance. She really took it to another level.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the song, Noah\u2019s emotional, heartfelt vocals mesh beautifully with Billy Ray\u2019s more toned down style.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to just be steady, and do less is more, and let the really talented singers\u2026 do all the stuff. Noah brought the heat vocally,\u201d he said. \u201cI sound like an old stone in the record, which is kind of appropriate. It\u2019s like, here\u2019s this fossilized stone, and then here\u2019s Noah with this aura of energy and that pure power vocal of hers just shining all around me. It\u2019s really a unique combination.\u201d <\/p>\n

The old merging with the new became a theme of the project. After Braison penned the track, the Cyruses headed to Castle Recording Studios, the Nashville recording studio where Billy Ray recorded \u201cStorm in the Heartland\u201d more than three decades ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirty years later, I\u2019m in there with my son recording this track with his band,\u201d Billy Ray marveled. \u201c\u2026 It was just a really unique, cool blend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billy Ray Cyrus Discusses the Music Video for \u201cOn Our Way Along\u201d<\/h3>\n

Everything came together with the track\u2019s music video, which was shot on the storied hill at the Cyrus family\u2019s Tennessee property.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the exact spot where I saw a man standing by the fire,\u201d Billy Ray said of the vision that inspired his poem. \u201c\u2026 [My kids] grew up on that hill. We sit and watch so many sunsets from that hill.\u201d <\/p>\n

Today, Billy Ray is more about the sunrises than the sunsets. Fans can see exactly why that\u2019s the case in the music video, which was shot just as the sun was climbing up the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you get in that video, that\u2019s a full on sunrise starting at 5:30 a.m. on a very cold day,\u201d he said. \u201cIt happened to capture the essence of that very sacred hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

This opportunity\u2014the song, his forthcoming album, working with his kids\u2014is one Billy Ray is grateful for, largely because he wasn\u2019t sure he\u2019d ever get a chance like it again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is this is all pretty serious to me, to be honest, because I didn\u2019t know if I\u2019d ever get to really play the game again,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 2019, I was the top of the world, the top of the mountain, with \u2018Old Town Road.\u2019 And then 2020 comes, and they give me a couple Grammys and close the door.\u201d <\/p>\n

As the pandemic caused concerts to stop and music festivals to get canceled, Billy Ray thought his days of making and performing music might have been behind him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut somehow, by just the pure love of making music\u2026 it just happened so organically,\u201d he said. \u201cI thank God for this moment. It\u2019s a really special time.\u201d<\/p>\n
