Viggo Mortensen will not be reprising the role of Aragorn in Andy Serkis\u2019 \u201cThe Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.\u201d Serkis, who is directing the movie and returning in front of the camera as Gollum, confirmed in an interview with ScreenRant <\/a>that Aragorn will be recast in the next Middle-earth film tentpole.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s out there at the moment, but I know there\u2019s a lot of speculation, but let\u2019s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,\u201d Serkis revealed.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Other than Serkis\u2019 return as Gollum, the only other actor announced to be joining \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d is Kate Winslet. The Oscar winner\u2019s casting was confirmed by Variety<\/em> <\/a>last month, although the specifics of her role remain under wraps. Warner Bros. hasn\u2019t confirmed who else will appear in the upcoming film, but franchise veterans Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are rumored to be returning as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf, respectively.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep it all back,\u201d Serkis told ScreenRant <\/a>about not revealing additional information about his movie. \u201cI mean, look, other than, I think it\u2019s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between \u2018The Hobbit\u2019 and \u2018The Lord of the Rings,\u2019 and it\u2019s \u2018The Hunt for Gollum,\u2019 and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we\u2019re just about on the launchpad now, and it\u2019s very exciting. And yeah, it\u2019s going to be a big ride.\u201d<\/p>\n Peter Jackson, who directed \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d and \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d film trilogies, is producing \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum\u201d with his creative partners and franchise mainstays Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Wood recently appeared on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast and said the prospect of finding a new Aragorn actor is \u201cgonna be tough\u201d because \u201cthose are tough boots [to fill].\u201d Wood told The Sunday Times<\/a> he would not want to be recast as Frodo.<\/p>\n \u201cI certainly wouldn\u2019t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I\u2019m alive and able,\u201d Wood said. \u201cIt\u2019s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling.
