Well, if you’re Bill Lawrence, you pick up that phone and you dial Connie Britton’s digits. That’s how the Friday Night Lights favorite came to play Steve Carell’s much-discussed ex-wife on the fifth episode of HBO’s Rooster, “Mr. Razzles.” And in the spirit of Coach Taylor, Britton strongly suspects that she was the backup option for the starting QB.

More from Gold Derby

“Playing this role came very last-minute,” the actress reveals to Gold Derby. “Bill called me at the 11th hour and was like, ‘Can you start working tomorrow on this thing?’ I was definitely not the first choice! So in my head, I was like, ‘Oh really, Bill? Who did you really want for this?'”

But Britton was more than happy to do Lawrence a solid. After all, the duo go way back — like three decades back. This September marks the 30th anniversary of Spin City, the Michael J. Fox sitcom that gave both of them their first significant TV credits. Lawrence co-created and produced the show with television legend, Gary David Goldberg, and Britton scored her first regular cast member gig as Nikki Faber.

“Bill was brand new at the time, and he was such a bro,” Britton remembers now with a hearty laugh. “I was kind of like, ‘Oh God, this guy.’ But we’ve both grown up a lot since then, and it was a joy to come back together. Every time I saw Bill on the Rooster set, I told him, ‘Wow, you got really good at this!’ Not just from a writing standpoint, but he also knows how to cast and bring his vision to life. We learned from the best on Spin City, and Bill has taken those lessons and run with them.”

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden"/>

Britton and Michael J. While talking with Elizabeth at one point during the episode, Katie sums up the parental dynamics in the Russo family, thusly: “You’re the dad, and he’s the mom.” For an actress whose defining TV role is “Mrs. Coach,” the chance to play the other parent was immediately appealing.

“Whether I meant to or not, I’ve become a go-to mom type,” Britton confesses. “So when I saw that line, I thought, ‘I don’t usually get to do that.’ Being able to lean into it was so much fun. And, for me, this episode is really about all three of them discovering who they are as a family when they’re together. It was a wonderful way to discover those specific roles.

“Elizabeth is an incredibly observant person, and knows how to read a room,” Britton continues. “And she really does love Greg — they were together for a long time. She may not admit it or care as much as he would like for her to care, but she cares for him in the way that she can.”

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden"/>

Britton on ‘Rooster’ (Courtesy HBO)

While Elizabeth isn’t going to be hanging around campus for the back half of the season, the final moments do hint at a possible return timed to a Thanksgiving gathering. And Britton teases that you can expect another appearance from her before the show’s freshman year wraps up. “Elizabeth has deep relationships with both Greg and Katie, but she’s also out of their lives to some degree,” the actress explains. “What I’ve loved about this whole process is the way that Bill and Matt [Tarses, Rooster‘s co-creator] bring everybody together. We go through the script and try the scene that way one time, and then we get to play until we find it. It shows how much faith and trust they have in the actors and the characters, but also in themselves.

“That kind of hearkens back to my Friday Night Lights days,” Britton adds. “To have that kind of freedom and be able to explore so much is when I feel most alive as an actor.”

Speaking of Friday Night Lights, that seminal drama series hits the big 2-0 later this year, and the cast and creative team were able to start celebrating early when Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor at the Oscars in March for his double role in Sinners. Britton calls that moment “incredible,” and was happy to see FNL veteran (and Oscar nominee) Jesse Plemons in the audience cheering Jordan on. “I’m so proud of both of them,” she says happily.

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden"/>

Britton and Kyle Chandler on ‘Friday Night Lights’ (Bill Records/NBC/Courtesy Everett Collection)

Asked to reflect on the show’s legacy ahead of the anniversary, Britton says it remains a “unique experience” in her career. “I remember when the show was winding down, Kyle Chandler and I used to get together all the time, and we’d make a list of the things that had become absolutely essential to us as actors. And I found those in this experience on Rooster.”

Best of Gold Derby

Sign up for Gold Derby’s Newsletter.
