Mark Consuelos and father Saul Consuelos Mark Consuelos shared that his father Saul passed away peacefully on March 23 after a long illness<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Kelly Ripa called her father-in-law \u201cthe greatest person I\u2019ve ever known\u201d and praised his impact on their family<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Saul immigrated from Mexico, served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, and was deeply involved in his grandchildren\u2019s lives<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Mark Consuelos<\/a>‘ father Saul Consuelos has died.<\/p>\n The Live with Kelly and Mark<\/em> co-host revealed the sad news on the Monday, April 6 episode of the syndicated talk show, explaining that Saul “passed away peacefully” on March 23 following a long illness.<\/p>\n His wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa<\/a>, remembered her father-in-law as \u201cthe greatest person I\u2019ve ever known,” getting emotional during her remarks. \u201cI can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will,\u201d she said. “He really is so symbolic of everything you are.”<\/p>\n The couple\u2019s three children \u2014 Michael Consuelos, 28, Lola Consuelos, 24, and Joaquin Consuelos, 23<\/a> \u2014 are taking the loss especially hard, Ripa added.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is the first loss they\u2019ve ever experienced in their lives,\u201d she said. “And I said, \u2018By the time I was 8, I had no grandparents. You got to grow up [with grandparents]. You got to have deep, meaningful conversations [with them].’ “<\/p>\n Kelly Ripa, her husband Mark Consuelos, and Mark’s parents Camilla Consuelos and Saul Consuelos, attend the premiere of ‘Off the Rez’ during the 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival at SVA Theater on April 26, 2011 in New York City Mark, 55, went on to reflect on the lessons he learned from his father, recalling his hands-on approach to teaching.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s funny, I used to make a joke about my dad \u2014 if you asked him what time it was, he would tell you how to build a watch,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were a lot of lectures, a lot of lectures and I learned so much. If he was fixing something in the house, he\u2019d make me watch and do it. And I didn\u2019t know at the time why he was doing that. But now at the house, I\u2019m able to do at least half of the stuff that he did. I learned the most by just watching him.”<\/p>\n The Riverdale<\/em> actor also discussed his father\u2019s journey to the United States and his decades of service.<\/p>\n “He came here from Mexico in his early teens, he immigrated here from Mexico. He served his country for 30 years. Ended up at Special Operations Command in Tampa. This young kid from Mexico just got his education from the navy. Was always going to school.\u00a0Was brilliant. Got his Masters while I was a kid.”<\/p>\n \u201cHe loved his country so much,\u201d Mark added. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to put a face to an immigrant, he would be the prime example of what this country promises people.\u201d<\/p>\n Ripa, 55, called her husband and his two siblings their father\u2019s \u201cliving legacy.”<\/p>\n She shared that Saul was a constant presence in their family life, often stepping in to help while Consuelos was working. \u201cA lot of times you\u2019d be away working and we would take the show on the road and your dad would come on remotes to take care of the kids so I could go to work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Saul would even come to school events while Mark was filming out of the country. It happen so often that people often mistook him for her husband.<\/p>\n “He was very involved,” Ripa said. “And I remember one year, randomly, [Mark] showed up and they were like, \u2018Is this your new husband? Because he resembles your old husband.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018No this is my husband, that was my father-in-law.’ But everybody assumed for a long time because my father-in-law was my husband. Because in New York, it\u2019s not unusual. It\u2019s pretty common. He was the average age range of all the dads.\u00a0“<\/p>\n Mark shared that he was able to say goodbye to his father while in rehearsals for his Broadway play, Fallen Angels<\/em><\/a>, calling the production a \u201cwelcomed distraction\u201d during a difficult time.<\/p>\n \u201cI knew I had to keep on going,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve had such a good time doing [the play]. And I know he\u2019s there watching and he\u2019s able to be part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re the strongest person I know. You continually inspire me every day,\u201d Ripa told her husband. \u201cAll of the good things that I love about you, I loved those same things about your dad. So I just want to say thank you, dad, for everything you gave to us.
